% Windows 7: sharing a folder for public password-free access % Ian! D. Allen - idallen@idallen.ca - www.idallen.com % Winter 2013 - January to April 2013 Based on work by Michael Porteus ================================ * Use this to share a folder on any ICT Algonquin Lab machines, e.g. to copy a CentOS or Fedora ISO image to your laptop. * The sharing will be lost when the machine reboots. You have to do this anew every time you need it. * We will assume we are sharing folder **CST** in this example. You can share any folder. 1. Right click on the **CST** folder (or any folder) that you want to share and select **Properties** from the drop-down menu to open up the **CST Properties** dialog box below. In that box below, select the **Sharing** tab and then select **Advanced Sharing**: \ ![CST Properties: Sharing](cst_properties_sharing.gif "CST Properties: Sharing") 2. Select **Advanced Sharing** (above) to open up the **Advanced Sharing** dialog box below. In that box below, add a check mark to **Share this folder** at the top. (By default, the **Everyone** Group has read access.) \ ![Advanced Sharing](advanced_sharing.gif "Advanced Sharing") 3. In the **Advanced Sharing** box above, click **OK** to return to **CST Properties**, below. Back in the **CST Properties** box, below, select the **Security** tab and then select **Edit**: \ ![CST Properties: Security](cst_properties_security.gif "CST Properties: Security") 4. Select **Edit** (above) to open up the **Permissions for CST** dialog box below. In that box below, in the **Security** section, select **Add**: \ ![Permissions for CST](permissions_for_cst_security2.gif "Permissions for CST") 5. Select **Add** (above) to open up the **Select Users or Groups** dialog box below. In that box below, type in the group name **Everyone** and select **Check Names** beside it. When you have entered a valid **Everyone** group, the system will underline the group name: \ ![Select Users or Groups](select_users_or_groups.gif "Select Users or Groups") 6. In the **Select Users or Groups** box, above, select **OK** to return to the **Permissions for CST** box, below. In the **Permissions for CST** box below, you should now see the new **Everyone** group in the list: \ ![Permissions for CST](permissions_for_cst_security.gif "Permissions for CST") 7. In the **Permissions for CST** box above, select **OK** again to return to the **CST Properties** box. Select **Close** to close the **CST Properties** box. 8. Now go to **Control Panel>All Control Panel Items>Network and Sharing Center**. On this page, select **Change advanced sharing settings** located near the top corner to open up the **Advanced sharing settings** dialog box, below. In that box below, scroll to the very bottom and select **Turn off password protected sharing**: \ ![Advanced Sharing Settings](advanced_sharing_settings.gif "Advanced Sharing Settings") 9. In the **Advanced sharing settings** dialog box above, select **Save Changes**. 10. You should now be sharing the **CST** folder without the need for a username or password. 11. Access the shared folder by going to your laptop computer and opening the share name: `\\xxx\CST\` where `xxx` is either the local IP address or the local name of the machine containg the share, e.g. similar to `\\10.1.2.3\CST\` or `\\t114-06\CST\` or `\\t126-23\CST\`. *(Based on research by Michael Porteus.)* -- | Ian!
