Question:What did you like most about this course?
Response Rate:75.36%   (52 of 69)
1very simple and easy to understand
2the system of teaching of professor
3our prof
4nothing
5ls *
6i liked learning that im not a big fan of linux command line prompt
7i liked ians easter egg references to other nerdy things and also the history of the evolution
8foo bar
9assignments
10anything to do with Linux.
11alot
12You learn so much (maybe too much). Using Ian's server was challenging/rewarding and a great way to learn.
13Working on the Linux server through putty rather than a virtual machine for Linux really made me enjoy the class a whole lot more, I personally hate working on virtual machines because I find they are slow and I find them extremely annoying... but Ian set up his course really well. Completing and handing in an assignment is super fulfilling! We were taught to have fun while working in a command line environment and I learned to have a lot more respect for the IT/Tech industry.
14When something is obviously good, it does not need the reasons to be enumerated.
15This course was really interesting. The professor was prepared every class also explained perfectly. This course has extremely diverse example for Linux people.
16This course was one of the best courses I've ever taken in my life. The content was amazing and very well made/designed. All course content covered the topics in a very in depth way. The assignments were amazing and really made it so the information learned could be remembered. The mazes in the assignments were one of the best parts. The assignments and tests were challenging in a good way and really makes one think about every answer. Also the candy during the final exam was nice.
17The teacher. He was very exciting during lectures, making his lectures not boring and easy to learn.
18The programming and theory classes.
19The online course notes were the best thing for me to learn from.
20The material.
21The first couple of weeks
22The fact that its over. Ian was a very hard person to deal with. I did not enjoy.
23The concepts we were learning weren't just presented as abstract ideas. Ian would regularly say things like "Your boss will come to you looking for information and this is how you deliver" to provide real-world examples of how we'd use the things we're learning. It was very helpful.
24The assignments were amazing to help learn how to use linux on a great pace
25The amount of stuff we learned in the short period of time
26Nothing
27Nothing, He does not explain very well and talk very fast and I was not able to follow
28Linux people
29It was well structures and the prof was excellent
30It was one of my favorite courses. The material was new but it was so well explained and teach, that all of those confusing commands actually made sense.

31Ian
32Ian's teaching style is questionable but very effective he is a passionate individual and teaches his course content with nothing less than confidence and passion as well. Ian is a great linux teacher and i will continually value the learning i received from him throughout this course. The assignments challenge students and reinforce the theory content so that it may become useful for later tests and exams.
33Ian was very interactive and made it fun.
34Ian is very interesting.
35Ian Allen is an exceptional teacher, with a passion for what he does. He is incredibly well knowledgeable in his field, and is great at passing that knowledge down to students. His passion is unmatched by any other professor, and he instills that passion in every student willing to accept it. Ian Allen is the best professor possible for this course.
36I liked that the Course had a slow progress through learning the command based interface with the server, I liked the assignment checker programs, I also liked the way scripting was taught through a series of weeks and not just in one, one hour class and expecting us to know how to do error checking and writing scripts for one assignment
37I liked that the linux lab's Ian provided were VERY difficult but at the same time, really doable and rewarding once completed. you actually felt like you were learning. You would finish a lab and be proud of yourself that you were able to complete it even if it took 3 hours or 12 hours. they were really fun. all the information to get through the lab was there on his website. this was honestly the most fun I've ever had doing homework even though some of the assignments seemed scary to do. once you start them and remain persistent, any one can complete it as long as they try hard.
38I like this course. Its job oriented. It was very interesting. I like the way of taking exam because i enjoyed to solve tree and permission questions.
39I like that the course is challenging and very interesting at the same time.
40I like that we dove in into core commands right away
41I like making trees.and giving permissions all concepts are good.
42I like everything about this course because it is very interesting .Even, I like the exam pattern if this course.
43I learned a lot of very annoying details.
44I enjoyed learning about how different yet similar to Windows Linux is.
45I did not like anything about this course, as a level 1 student he went too fast and I found him inpatient at most. His website is unorganized, you would have to go all over the place to find an answer, and on top of it the important stuff like commands are in very small font, really hated that.
46He should try to teach and answer students rather than tricking them or just referring them to the notes.
47Fun
48Everything Ian made it so much fun. It's the best courses in CST.
49Course website provides tons of information. Lab assignments are relevant to course material.
50Coming from a place with zero Linux background, I am glad I was able to learn a lot and grasp various concepts.
51Class started and ended precisely on time. covered the content as described in the syllabus and taught more than that. A good class to be in if you are into Linux
52Being exposed to Linux for the first time during this course Ian's approach is very thorough and detailed to facilitate integration of new users to Linux.

Question:How could the course be improved to be of benefit to future students?
Response Rate:69.57%   (48 of 69)
1this gives the basic knowledge of every system of the computer
2rm -r *
3nothing
4nothing. again, everything was super fun but very difficult.
5no way it can improve
6maybe remove some of the more intermediate content near the end and slow the overall speed of the course a lot of content is thrown at you for a week and the amount of reading per class is a lot to crunch and take in.
7its good
8it is a tough course for many. The content is foreign to alot.. i would recommed more smaller assignments should given and less larger ones, so students will have more opportunities to learn
9everything

10dev/null
11better explanation
12This course is perfect for future students. It has lots of useful examples and assignments. So, it will be require for future Linux students.

13The website for the course notes is very thorough but could be a bit more user friendly in its searching and indexing.
14The theory portion of this course needs to be a bit earlier in the day. It is hard to absorb all the information thrown at you from 8pm-10pm. The course website is a complete mess! Ian constantly tells us to read all the words. The problem with this is to read all the words and fully understand what he wants from us we have to go through hyperlinks where there are whole pages with information that have more links and so on and so forth. It is very aggravating to have to search a million pages. I just don't have time to read all those words.
15The teacher talking slow and explaining
16The resources should be on the brightspace instead of professor's own private website.
17The information in the online study materials (henceforth : textbook) along with the lectures properly prepare a student for the assignments and tests. This course, takes a student from not knowing the first thing about Linux, to attaining the fundamentals as a foundation upon which to build. However, the textbook would benefit from being rewritten by a professional author for two main reasons. Key ideas are sometimes hard to identify and navigating to those ideas can be cumbersome. The textbook carefully builds a framework to understand the key ideas. By the end of a topic one can understand the main ideas and many details about it. A beginner lacks even the most basic terms so understanding the conclusion of a section may be difficult. The experience is analogous to using complex terms in the definition of a complex term. Experts in a topic are often incapable of appreciating the fact that laypeople do not know their terminology. Instead of using the most concise sentence with the most precise words at a conclusion, it could be helpful to flesh out the idea with a bit of verbosity. As a beginner student progresses though the course, and Linux terms become more accessible, this need will diminish. The textbook feels like the shaker was cracked open while peppering in hints and links to useful information. While reading about how to perform a specific task, much time is spent reading about the mistakes past students have made instead of using more space to explain the idea. It’s frustrating to get lost or confused while reading about what not to do when one does not yet know what to do. Skipping these sections is forbidden by the golden rule: read all the words. The textbook builds complex ideas from the ground up, moving the hints/distractions until after the idea is built will be helpful.
18The assignments were mostly good, but there were some that felt very easy, and others that felt very difficult so one week you'd work for about an hour on an assignment and the next week you'd spend five times that. Maybe properly distributing the workload across the assignments could be looked into. Otherwise it was a very well structured course.
19Some of the labs felt a little long. Some steps could have probably been skipped.
20Slow down the intensity a little bit. For someone with no experience it is difficult to learn in the time period given
21Remove IAN D Allen
22Prof. Allen's course website was a little all over the place and hard to navigate at first.
23Nothing
24Nothing.
25Nothing.
26Non he is a near perfect teacher and should get a raise...
27More hands on involvement for those who have never used linux.
28Maybe the prof could treat the students with a bit more respect and understanding.
29Make it so that 40% of the class doesnt fail the final.
30Make it not as intense.
31It's perfect
32It seems really good as is.
33If the assignments were due on Saturdays or Sundays.
34I think instead of website students should given book otherwise all good.the website is so vast for study otherwise all good.
35I don't know I really enjoyed the class
36His website. He is very good with linux, I just dont think he knows how to teach where people can understand him.
37He should try to teach and answer students rather than tricking them or just referring them to the notes.
38Have it be slowed down a bit. everything seems rushed and it is hard to learn everything in the time the class rushes through.
39Give the answers to students in an easier format.
40For me the course was really great so I don't have anything to say about this right now.
41For future students it will be very beneficial because they can get the jobs in professional fields.
42Everything is perfect. No need of any improved. I find very difficulty in class notes in begining.
43Don't keep assignment on each and every week as there are many assignments to do.
44Course notes might need some editing. Often examples are presented that are made redundant by following examples.
45Course material was great but too wordy. The same information could be given more concisely. The final exam content can be cut into half. The students can be judged for the same material in half of the items; if they know 50 items then they definitely know 100 items.
46Change to a smaller classroom so that the prof isn't on one side of the room the entire time.
47Cater the course towards people who do not know anything about linux, that way the people, who do not know anything about linux, can learn something.

Having the lab day on the day the assignment was due was not helpful at all...

Yes doing the worksheets help with the labs, but if you include the worksheets as a part of the assignment requirements, the students might be more engaged.

48At first, I really hated that all out work was on his own personal website rather than Brightspace, but I learned to love it and how it is set up. So I can't think of any way to improve the course.

Question:What did you like most about the course professor?
Response Rate:82.61%   (57 of 69)
1the way he delivers the information
2the most enthusiastic teacher we have. the most passionate teacher we have. he loves his job which made me love to be in class. Sometimes the content moves too fast so its too hard to follow, but you have to come in focused and ready to write down EVERYTHING in this class, and you'll survive.
3the humour was refreshing, also his experience in the field was quite impressive
4riding a scooter inside the school
5nothing at all
6nothing at all, he talks too fast, barely gives you information, makes you go on his messy website to find answers and half of the time they are difficult to find.
7my most fav prof ever
8ian is an amazing human being.
9he is very friendly and gentle
10he is eccentric and loves teaching Linux, it is his life
11funny
12energy
13attitude
14Wonderful instructor with a brilliant teaching style. He is full of energy and enthusiasm and keeps his class alive with his vibes and knowledge.
15Very passionate.
16Very essentric
17This professor was truly amazing, his knowledge and passion of the topics is unbelievable. He is able to explain things in a way that students will understand. He answered questions when needed. His communication with students was great. He designed a great course and made great course content (website). Overall one of the best professors I've ever had.
18The way he teaches is fun and he maintains student's interest in the class.
19The way he taught.
20The professor was prepared every class also explained perfectly. This course has extremely diverse example for Linux people.

He was great person also, he never absent and late every class.

21The passion behind what he was teaching was amazing, it made something that most of us had never touched begin to like it since it was fun and challenging
22Taught material in an engaging manner.
23See above, and his rapping skills.
24Prof. Allen is very enthusiastic about his teaching and his passion for Linux shows during his lectures.
25Passionate about subject matter. Easy to approach.
26Passionate
27Nothing
28Ian's teaching style is questionable but very effective he is a passionate individual and teaches his course content with nothing less than confidence and passion as well. Ian is a great linux teacher and i will continually value the learning i received from him throughout this course. The assignments challenge students and reinforce the theory content so that it may become useful for later tests and exams.
29Ian was never late
30Ian keeps the lectures interesting. He is very knowledgeable and answers every question well and in detail. One of the best teachers in CST so far.
31Ian is very passionate about Linux
32Ian has a great personality. Makes what could be a bland subject much more interesting to learn about. It's very clear he's been doing this for a long time and he's honed the course to provide the best environment for learning.
33I was not happy!
34I thought he was crazy at first, I was right.

I liked Everything

35I never felt sleepy in his lecture.
36I like that Ian is animated in class. It really draws you in, to listen to him.
37I like that he's very passionate about his work and he does his best answering any questions of the students.
38I like everything about my professor because he is very nice as well his way of teaching is excellent and I like him very much.

.

39I enjoyed his quirkiness and how he keeps the class interesting.
40I do like his quirkiness in and outside of class.
41I absolutely loved being in Ian's classes, I had him for my lectures AND labs so I could always count on him to lend a helping hand when I'm struggling on a part of any of his assignments. And his explanations always make me feel like an idiot because it usually ends up being a really small thing I forgot about that was causing me so many problems, I just needed Ian to read the question to me and maybe give me a hint and I would remember the solutions to my Linux problems. (Or I just didn't read all the words ;D)

Ian is knowledgeable, energetic, amicable, funny and so much more! I hope that by some miracle, he could teach Linux to me throughout the entire program.

42His teaching style is very enthusiastic and engaging. One of our lectures was a two hour period from 8PM-10PM and with any other professor I would've had trouble focusing. Ian shows you examples as he goes through the notes, and then uses his linux server to show you what those commands look like in practice. He'll often type out a command and ask us what the output/result will be. It's a very engaging class.
43His energy
44His energy during lectures.
45He was an entertaining lecturer, and really knew the course subject.
46He should try to teach and answer students rather than tricking them or just referring them to the notes.
47He loves what he does and is always wanting to help others
48He is linux people
49He is incredibly knowledgeable on the subject and presents the materials in an easy way to learn.
50He is awsome professor. He is treasure of knowledge. I really hates off to his efforts.
51He is always encourage their students.always support and make us understand all things.
52He is a genius, unique and a legend.
53He easily Ian showed the work and great detail and added some funny twists to grab my attention to the course
54He definitely knows his stuff and will go over the content and explain it correctly.
55Friendly, knowledgeable and the course notes online were a wonderful learning tool.
56Everything!
57An expert with years of real world experience is the best kind of teacher.

Faculty:IAN ALLEN
Question:What, if anything, could the professor do differently to be of benefit to future students?
Response Rate:65.22%   (45 of 69)
1talk a little slower during lectures and slow down, it sometimes is hard to follow
2speak slower and offer better reviews
3nothing
4nothing he should get a raise and maybe some gold chains
5not be such a cock
6make the course easier.
7it is a tough course for many. The content is foreign to alot.. i would more smaller assignments should given and less larger ones, so students will have more opportunities to learn
8he is already great and has done a lot for us
9explain more
10amazing professor. I wish more professors were like Ian
11actually teach the course content during the lectures
12Try not to have outdated opinions. I witnessed a few counts of mocking accents toward international students.
13There is nothing for do differently for future students because he is nice teacher and I like everything about him so I dont think it will be change.
14Teach people all the stuff they failed on the final.
15Take the material a little slower
16Speak slowly. And give some to understand and revise previous chapters.
17Slow the course down.
18Rap more
19Nothing. Ian knows what he's doing.
20Not sure.
21No coments
22N/A
23More linux rap
24More follow along examples in class and explaining steps as we go along.
25More 1 on 1
26Maybe go a little slower. Some days were a little hard to keep up with information and writing notes. I know there is a lot to cover, but I can't learn if I am taking in to much information at once and don't have time to write quick notes about it.
27Maybe give answers when asked rather than telling to read all words, I mean, LINUX PEOPLE ARE LAZY!

And also reduce the words in the assignments.

28Make the answers easier to find
29Ian can be a bit rash/ rude and insulting through email and it can give some students anxiety and stress them out and make them feel worse than is actually needed and a simple answer will suffice
30I truly believe Ian is the golden standard that ALL college professors should aspire to be, he made learning a difficult subject fun, fulfilling, and most importantly, informative. Thank you, Ian, for sending me off to my second term in the best way.
31I found it a little hard to follow what he said at times as he would be going through material fairly quickly.
32I don't think I would change anything. Ian does a very good job.
33I don't think so, everything is perfect. The way of his teaching is great.
34How when you ask questions to him, he just points you to his website and tells you to read all the words.
35Hes great.
36He should try to teach and answer students rather than tricking them or just referring them to the notes.
37He is perfect in his way of teaching.
38He is perfect and he gave us amazing assignments. However, professor needs more assignments for future students.

The diverse assignments will be improve Linux people.

39He is a genius. I think it's to the school to make him teach more courses, that's how the school could benefit future and current students.
40Fix his website, make it that people can understand how to navigate better on your site. And a little bit slower and don't go off topic. couldn't understand anything this semester with linux level 1.
41Everything
42Bring cake once in a while.
43Be less abusive in emails. If people ask for extensions they may already know they don't have good time management skills and that might be a sore point in their emotional state. Insulting the students time management skills does not make them work better and is not productive to helping the students learn better time management skills. Denying them the extension can help them with that but there is not reason to insult them in the process and doing so may harm their work effort.
44All is good.no need of changes.
45- give more time on assignments and midterms.

make sure he wears a helmet and shin-pads next time, safety first.

Response Rate:83.33%   (55 of 66)
1very interesting lectures, and varied ways of learning.
2very helpfull for fature
3this course is very useful and interesting. you get to learn a lot of new things in this course.
4the worksheets are very useful
5the professor Ian Allen
6the professor is extremely good
7scripting was and still is hard, but it was fun learning how to create them
8reading all the words helps
9learning linux.
10doing the worksheet
11course has online textbook
12You really learn the fundalmentals of linux and its a class that a newbie or someone with some experience will learn something new
13Very knowledgeable about Linux.
14This is a good course especially for those students who want to know or explore deeply about the Linux.
15This course is presented in such a way that it seems very difficult at a glance, but once you really start to get into assignments and the notes provided it's easy to see that it is much simpler than it first seems. The information given in notes combined with the assignments and tests provide a challenging but rewarding experience while learning the basics of the Linux operating system.
16There wasn't really anything I liked about this course.
17The way of teaching and explaining things.
18The way it was progressively taught making it easy to learn even though it was challenging.
19The way he engaged students.
20The lecture classes are very fun unlike alot of them as the prof is amazing and keeps you awake.
21The course material was very interesting to learn, the material was also sufficient to learn the basic of Linux and give you access to incredibly useful sources to increase your depth of understanding in the Linux operating system.
22The assignments were an excellent learning tool.
23Meeting Students
24Material was challenging, in a rewarding way. Every possible resource to do well was provided
25Linux was interesting
26Learning in class
27Learn new thing (linux) and how it benefits in future
28It's basically perfect when it comes to learning linux command line
29It's a basic step towards to get knowledge in Linux.
30It introduced to something completely new. It was a challenge but Ian was always went into detail with his lectures.
31Interesting material and great professor. I find the lectures very engaging and have never regretted attending any of them. I would love to continue with Ian in future semesters as unlikely as that may be, he's the best professor I've ever had so far.
32If you can read and pay attention in class you will succeed. His website is a labour of love. It is in depth, but the links can be a bit confusing and it is possible to miss stuff, but everything you need is on his website.
33Ian's enthusiasm.
34Ian's Enthusiasm for linux and the interesting way he approaches problems
35I really liked being able to learn what I was doing for the lab assignments. Ian is an excellent teacher and he really cares about your grades in his course, compared to the other professors. He teaches the material and points us to his website where he keeps his personal notes, instead of letting us and try to figure out what to do for the assignments and google them.
36I loved scripting. I thought it was a perfect combination of everything we learned throughout the year.
37I love that I came into this course not knowing anything about linux and now I have a more proficient knowledge of it.
38I like the way how the course was presented.
39I like how the course teaches us the basic knowledge to operate Linux as an operating system. I really enjoyed this course!
40I like how the course gave a relaxed tone to learning linux in the first few classes. I like how the content was shown to us with lots of detail and lots of examples to practice on as well as see proof that the commands worked and what they did. That is about it.
41I like how useful and secure linux is
42I learned Linux. I had no idea what linux even was before I took this class.
43I felt I learned a lot and the website coupled with the lynda videos helped me understand the linux course better
44I enjoyed the Professors enthusiasm.
45I didn't like his methods at all
46How fun and active Ian’s classes were, he taught the class perfectly and covered exactly what we needed and went over the top to relate our questions to the real world and show how to apply them.
47How different the course it compared to the other courses
48HELLO LINUX PEOPLE!
49Everything is well explained and layed out well
50Controlling the whole pc by using commands and typing less
51Challenging Assignments
52Almost everything, lectures are amazing, assignments are wonderful, learned a lot
53All the course material was online. All the words. I bought one of the recommended texts. Was not disappointed. It makes for a good reference book.

Question:How could the course be improved to be of benefit to future students?
Response Rate:74.24%   (49 of 66)
1try to give more details for assignments
2nothing
3nothing special
4n/a
5more examples and demos of code during lecture
6maybe give more time for the assignment
7make the lab professors teach us something not only be there to watch us like guards
8i think it is good nothing is to be improved.
9i found the CLS quite confusing to use and felt that it could have been a bit more straightforward, too much information and not enough practise.
10everything is good
11Would be better to have more lab hours.
12Well, for starters, Ian has to make his website either more appealing, or easier to navigate through instead of just throwing us into the deep end with a "Use Ctrl+Click to make a bread crumb trail so you don't get lost." The website may have been fine for the students with hard drive caddies but this is almost 2019 and making me want to visit the website and learn is a real thing that has to be addressed. The amount of content that is stuffed into this first semester is pretty hectic especially near the end of the term. We have so many projects that overlap, classes whose projects overlap other projects and i think that should be taken into account instead of one prof worrying about their program and theirs only. The Course Linux server has to be upgraded to accompany more people doing projects last minute instead of pushing the due dates to later. No matter if there is 1 person on the server or 100 it should be able to adequately handle the task at hand. Also remove the trick questions on the tests and exams, I'm not here to spoofed by a double negative and get the question wrong, I'm here to learn the content and make sure that the content i am learning is getting reinforced with the tests and expanding my knowledge of the subject.
13USE A BETTER COURSE WEBSITE.
14This course needs a huge improvement mainly because of how professor Ian Allen teaches his students. The course material on his server that he uses to teach us and what we use to do our assignments is equivalent to going through a complicated maze. It's very tedious and has discouraged me greatly from wanting to continue to learn Linux. Another issue on his server is how he makes what should otherwise be simple instructions into complicated wording of the English language. When he gave us bonus assignments to boost our midterm marks, his assignment instructions involved having to go through the tedious process of writing each question we got wrong on the midterm, writing the right answer, finding where we can find the right answer on his course server, and explaining why we got each question wrong. It would have been a lot better if we had makeup tests like some of our other professors from different courses have done. One thing that greatly disappointed me was how we weren't allowed to work on assignments in groups. This doesn't make sense to me at all as we were encouraged by our other professors from different courses that we can work in groups on assignments as long as we don't plagiarize. Another thing that bothers me is his attitude, most of the time when I would ask him a question he would get annoyed or cold with me which discouraged me from ever wanting to ask him anything again. I am not fond of his teaching methods as he gives us too much information in little time and it is difficult to keep up. He gets frustrated if we don't understand what I'm assuming he considers to be simple concepts. Lastly, I was very disappointed when he stopped doing a full two hour class review of midterm 2 and the final exam. For the first midterm he did do a full two hour review which greatly helped me but for some reason he greatly reduced the review time of midterm 2 to 10-15 minutes and 1 hour for the final exam. There is a reason why the class average is low, why many students in this course are either dropping out, failing, or not getting a higher grade than they normally would. I'm not saying that this course should be easier, I'm saying there needs to be another way of teaching this course. I believe future students could benefit from having a different professor teaching Linux.
15The site could be made less congested
16The only thing I think needs improvement is the website. It's the only course we have that has material outside of Brightspace, and its just a maze of hyperlinks.
17The links can lead to a barrage of tabs making you forget what you were trying to learn in the first place. Sending you in an Alice in Wonderland-esque rabbit hole of information.
18Teaching slower lots of my peers complain that his teaching method is to fast.
19Taking less time to do useful work
20Promote group work and study groups instead of having people struggle on their own.
21Probably make so theres a little more practice for the material as some people struggle alot like myself and would like if there was more practice for some assignments to help prepare me for tests and etc
22Nothing
23Nothing
24Nothing. This is an excellent course. I came in with the mindset that I wouldn't like this class at all, and I left wanting more of the class.
25None.
26No improvement required.
27Narrow down weekly readings, too many links for different pages, especially for 1 week (combined with Networking Fundamentals, not enough time to read material for all courses)
28More lecture hours with Ian. Lab periods with other instructors are a waste of time.
29Make the lecture class right before the midterm dedicated to solving practice questions, You did it for the first midterm but not the second. Grades would have been better if you had done a problem solving class before the second midterm.
30It does not need to.
31If Ian would actually post our calculated grades on Brightspace and actually make that information available, it would be of tremendous benefit to students. It shouldn't be a state secret. We should know approximately what mark we have and if we're passing or failing, so we know what mark to aim for. (also for the overachievers among us: How harder do we need to try to get that A+?) Just a general idea would be nice. Every other course has it, why not this one?
32Ian's site is a wonderful resource, but a pain in the *** to navigate. When an assignment or studying become a scavenger hunt that can last hours it turns you off of his learning style.

* Inappropriate words were found and removed from this response.

33I think we covered scripting way to quick.
34I think the overall presentation of the information for the course (the website) could use some cleaning up. The information is all there but it can be difficult at times to find or read it.
35I think that teach student meetings should be improved. Also my lab teacher had a hard time explaining any material, which made the course more difficult to understand.
36I think the course has all necessary ingredients to be the best course.
37I think this course cover too many things in just four months so in my point of view some of students need more time to cover these all things.
38He needs to incorporate the website into Brightspace.
39Have someone who knows basic web development create a better website for the notes. They were by far the worst part of the course. When trying to find the resources necessary to do the work is the most annoying part of an assignment, you need to reevaluate your methods.
40Have a more streamlined website that is more straightforward
41For my point of view, this course will really help the student to get the best knowledge in IT industry.
42Can't really think of anything. The course materials are pretty complete and have been used successfully for many years, and have been adjusted as needed.
43Better website
44Better infrastructure to ensure the cls is not slowed down as badly during peak times (on the due date of assignments when everyone is using it)
45BETTER NOTE TAKING PLAN! LESS CONFUSING WEBSITE/NOTES. JAMS 500,000 WORDS INTO ONE NOTE PAGE. IMPOSSIBLE TO FOLLOW IN LECTURE.
46Another professor and more reasonable work
47A more realistic approach for assignments

16This course professor is very good most important thing about professor is he has a lot of knowledge about Linux.
17The way he does his assignments if you ever get stuck on one you can go on his website to look for the answer.
18The way he teaches is really really good
19The professor was very energetic and knowledgeable about the material. When asked question he gave examples to supplement the students understanding of his answer.
20The professor goes into great detail when going over course material.
21The professor is extremely helpful
22The class is not dull that is for sure.
23Nothing.
24Lots of energy.
25Ian's teaching methods and his site that has access to all of the information we will even need. Great teacher as long as you READ ALL THE WORDS!
26Ian's energy is unmatched by any professor
27Ian was entertaining and kept my interest during long lectures
28Ian is such a great teacher, you can clearly tell he loves his job and he is clearly a true master at linux. He teaches incredibly well and does so with a way that makes class enjoyable and so the content being taught stays with the student.
29Ian is an incredibly knowledgeable and passionate teacher when it comes to Linux. He uses very engaging lecture techniques to allow students to learn actively while he teaches new material or reviews things that have been covered previously. His assignments are challenging and worded in ways that make you think instead of just going through the motions. All of the course assessments (tests, assignments, quizzes) are written in ways that make students think about what the answers will be instead of being able to memorize everything word for word. Overall Ian is an incredible teacher who knows the material well and does an outstanding job sharing his knowledge with students in a variety of ways to help with their own understanding.
30Ian is a great professor that knows linux inside and out! He keeps the class engaged and helps with their knowledge comprehension.
31Ian energy is unmatched and takes a boring topic and engages students to do better not only in linux but life. If anything I can take from this course its to read all the words. The details are really important
32Ian Allen is the best professor I've ever had. He lives and breathes Linux, and has been an expert in it since pretty much when it came out with his background in UNIX. He also gives very good general advice, such as the importance of reading "all the words", and the importance of working smarter such as by eliminating distractions and knowing when to take a break or switch tasks. He's very encouraging to those who care about the course, whether or not they're getting amazing grades, as long as they're putting in effort and trying to understand and improve. He's also just very experienced in the computer field in general. He's been doing email, the internet, and later the World Wide Web at an advanced level since pretty much when they became available commercially, if not earlier. If learning Linux is something that you want to do, he's pretty much ideal for teaching it in my opinion.
33I really enjoyed the professor. He was very engaging and made the course interesting.
34I liked his energy when we first met him and the amount of knowledge he had about Linux and the Unix. He would make you laugh sometimes and didn't really put down wrong ideas which is good.
35I like how our professor Mr. Ian Allen actively interacts with the students and liven up the lectures. His website really helped me get through this semester and learned a lot about Linux. I am happy taking this course! You're the best Ian.
36I didn't really like him.
37His willingness and curiosity to guide us about the course
38His jokes
39His humor.
40His enthusiasm to teach the material and ensure his students really learned what he was teaching.
41His engagement. He was tough but fair.
42His energy and knowledge
43His attitude. He would always start the class with a big "GOOD MORNING, LINUX PEOPLE!" His ability to teach is amazing. I came in not knowing a thing about Linux, and I left wanting to learn more from him. I also had him in Lab class, and he's down to Earth with his students. If you weren't doing too well in the course, he would sit down and talk to you personally about he. I feel that he really cares if we pass or fail. He's really kind and funny. I wish I could have him in the future.
44He's very knowledgeable about Linux and has a quirky sense of humour.
45He's easily one of the best profs this level. You could tell he does care about us and our success.

Credit where credit is due here.

All the materials you could ever need are online, Ian provides all the words to read and study.

If you don't do well, it is your fault for NOT READING ALL THE WORDS.

46He knows exactly how to get the students to concentrate in class.
47He knew his material and how to teach it. He made us problem solve rather than just giving us the answer.
48He is wonderful.
49He is very energetic and friendly.
50He is special, very smart and leads the classes very interesting, involving students.
51Exciting, realistic, and extremely knowledgeable about the topic
52Engaged, shows examples of why things do not work, why they do work, excellent teaching method
53Can be funny. He lives his course. He is dedicated.

Question:What, if anything, could the professor do differently to be of benefit to future students?
Response Rate:66.67%   (44 of 66)
1rely less on the CLS and try to cater more to the needs of the students. I felt lost pretty much all semester and sometimes felt like i was being treated like a child with the trick questions connected to instructions and the "read all the words" motto. I think that this course only caters to one specific learning style. for those people who find the CLS confusing and can't use it well have almost no alternative and no chance to do good in the course.
2nothing
3nothing
4not to go so fast during lectures
5nN/A
6n/a
7maybe promote group work in a way that would help people learn, as I found this the hardest part of the course is struggling through the material on my own.
8in my point of view he is the best and good so he dosen't have to do any differently.
9he could be more kind for students when they ask him help kindly
10by changing his course notes because it has so many links inside each.
11While I'm not sure everyone would agree, I do think the way that questions are worded can at times be far more complicated than they maybe need to be but I still find that it's more than worth it to have harder questions to help better understand.
12Too many trick questions. Too EXTRA! Super long Course Information Quiz, Answer questions straight up. It helps everyone. Just show me how to solve the problem so I can learn and attempt on my own. No "directing to the website". Just show me how its done, then i'll have my go at it.
13This course needs a huge improvement mainly because of how professor Ian Allen teaches his students. The course material on his server that he uses to teach us and what we use to do our assignments is equivalent to going through a complicated maze. I'm not saying that this course should be easier, I'm saying there needs to be another way of teaching this course.
14Third party resources would be helpful for situations in which Ian's course notes do not sufficiently help you understand the material.
15There are a lot of things I could say (generally not good) but I'll take the diplomatic approach on this one:

I find Ian is great but he just does some things in the wrong way and handles some things in the wrong way. He is a scary person when angered. He should be more understanding and have better listening skills.

I do not agree with Ian holding our exam marks hostage unless we prove we filled out the course evaluation.

This is already a stressful time of year. We are stressed enough and this is not helping. Everyone should know how well (or not well) they did, regardless.

16Teaching more slowly and changing certain ways he convays information. It's a hit or miss for most students. Lots of peers I know complain about it. I find the way he teaches to be fine.
17Take more time covering scripting
18Stay the way he is! He's the best teacher by far.
19See Questions #8. I have combined both 11&8 together.
20Professor Ian should teach higher levels of the program. :)
21Probably not call people in the middle of labs and talk about peoples marks infront of everyone, especially if you did poorly on tests it just embarrasses you in front of everyone
22Nothing
23Nothing.
24Nothing.
25Nothing really. Yo go Ian
26Nothing at all
27Not talk about Chinese hackers trying to get into his server. I find it rude to be mentioning that Chinese people are always hacking into his server, If anything I'd find that to be racist
28Not harass the students to do the course evaluation on the course Linux server. Everything else is perfectly fine. Excellent teaching methods. I have never been so motivated to learn Linux. Thank you.
29N/a
30Make material on 1-2 pages per week/assignment, found myself with 5-8 different tabs open for 1 week of content constantly
31I think that the course professor could make the notes a bit easier to follow. I find it difficult to read the content in a efficient way.
32I read the feedback that previous students have offered. In my opinion, he needs to apply the feedback to the teaching style.

I would also like to see a Skills based assessment for this program instead of Midterms and final exams that offer 1 minute per question. Often the words can trip a student up if they slow down to read them...which may take more than a minute. It seems illogical, but its also a test so I get it. Regardless, I feel a SBA for this course should be introduced.

33I found this course and assignments very hard in general. Ian seems to always try to mislead students with tricky spelling and wordings, and occasionally goes off on a tangent about things that are not really useful. There was one class where he went on about people trying to hack his server (at least 25 mins) , while he speeds over other more important content such as VI and setting up our bash profile. (10 mins max on this)
34I don't thing so professor have to change something.
35I don't know.
36Honestly, I don't know because the professor has done a great job.
37Honestly I don’t think there’s anything on the teaching aspect, just the website could be made easier for people to navigate
38His Marking could be a bit more lenient
39He sorted information in websites in the proper format so students can easily understand the whole concepts without interpreting.
40He is the best.
41Fix his website, focus on the information at hand instead of moving ahead.
42Can't really think of anything. Linux is not for everybody, so I think there will always be a subset of students who are unable or unwilling to handle the material no matter what Professor Allen does.
43Better teaching methods and strategies, as neither catered to my learning abilities. Update learning materials and servers that will allow all users on without crashing said course server.
44Actually answer emails professionally and not in a sarcastic, petty tone. If a student asks a simple question, do not simply respond with, "It's in the course notes." It is the job of the professor to reply as best as possible to help the student in their time of need. Many students may not understand the course notes word for word, and so a professor's explanation in an email would help with that. Ian is very passive, childish, and unprofessional when replying to emails. He expects students to follow a strict guideline for email structure, format, and content, and yet when Ian responds through his Linux platform, the email arrives in a very difficult to read non-rich text format that is plain confusing. Adapt to the new age of technology, and help students appropriately when they ask for it directly.

1the prof was very good and clearly cared for the students
2just doing anything involving Linux I like
3Very Interactive and students seemed to enjoy from the beginning.
4The work was challenging.
5The most thing I like about this course is that we learn how to find files, copy and move files very easily
6The fact that we used a remote terminal.
7Nothing
8Learning something new.
9It was a very challenging course and was the hardest of my six courses this semester by far. There was a lot of work in this course but if you did the readings and 'read all the words' then you could make it through the course. He does offer make up assignments in case you didn't do well on an assignment of test so that is a really great thing. You really have to be a master with time management to survive the course with a good mark.
10Everything

Question:How could the course be improved to be of benefit to future students?
Response Rate:84.62%   (11 of 13)
1nothing
2longer due dates
3abit more slower paste when it comes to scripting for people that never have done it
4Well, I have found that the only way to succeed in this course is if you have a strong reading ability. I struggled with this course because you learned everything from reading. As a hands-on learner, this was hard, even in the lectures he would be talking and writing things so fast without explaining what anything does. I think that this course has probably been taught the same way for many years but I think that it should change so that people like me without great reading skills can still perform well in the course. I also think some of the assignments are overly complex and hard for a first-year Linux course. I was expecting to learn about the Linux GUI but no it was all commands and scripts.
5Unsure.
6They can learn how to do Linux
7The online textbook/website could be easier to understand. Layout is fine. Wording could be better.
8Please take this advice since I suffered in this course due to this!! Please remove the content from his website and move it to brightspace. His website is very hard to follow and it seems at some points there's almost to much information (overkill). His website is overkill to the max. So much information and hyperlinks to other places that its overwhelming and is hard to follow because its all words. I didn't really enjoy this class as much as the others due to his website.
9I think maybe an additional lab period every week might benefit the students because it is a lot to learn if you have no experience with Linux in the past
10I don't think much can be improved. Everything is reasonable and resources are provided effectively.
11Better explained assignments, he expects you to know all the commands unlike other class where you practice the commands thus getting to know them better.

1very caring and loved to help the students
2ian's rambunctiousness
3Very enthusiastic, funny and thus makes lectures go by so smoothly. I feel more involved in the class and that I can listen. I can stay focused for his 3 hour lectures due to this. I wish all my professors had this much enthusiasm. He is also very good at helping. During Labs he will notice whas wrong if you have a question but instead of telling you exactly what he rather guides you to the answer which I like more.
4Overall good professor
5Ian was an excellent teacher. He was always very helpful in the lab and always gave an entertaining lecture. You can feel that he actually cares about each and every student and they aren't just a 'number' to him. It really makes you want to do well in his course
6His very funny and interesting to listen to.
7His personality.
8He made lectures engaging and entertaining.
9He is eccentric and loves the topic. In labs he helps you and gives you feed back on what you are doing, always willing to help.
10He is a really cool guy very interested in the subject.
11Friendly and passionate about the subject matter.
12Cheerful,funny

3There is really nothing that the professor can do differently, his good as he is.
4Only complaint is I wish is if he could shorten the content or organize it more if he's going to use his site.
5Nothing.
6Not much.
7Make the assignments more like practicing and not thinking that everyone is going to know every command in the assignment.
8Be less funny
9Again, I think that if he could slow down the lectures and explaining what he is doing at each step.

Question:What did you like most about this course?
Response Rate:100.00%   (7 of 7)
1this course is very interesting and it is always teaching us something new.
2Very thorough, provided a clear progression of ideas, and linked the concepts in a logical and understandable manner.
3This course is extremely hard, Yeah life is hard in general but from some people who don't normal do coding or anything on the side. Some people just want to do computer technician? There's tons of technician jobs where you dont need to use linux
4Nothing.
5Ian. He's a brilliant teacher who tells you the truth: you need to read all the words. I've never taken a course so literal before, it's perfect.
6Great course and I love linux....there I said it!
7Got to hang out with the Linux man himself, Ian Allen.

Question:How could the course be improved to be of benefit to future students?
Response Rate:71.43%   (5 of 7)
1nothing has to be improved as everything is perfect.
2The formatting of the worksheets could be changed to a format that is easier to fill out and go back to later.
3The course can be better if Ian teaches the work load of the same week, instead of giving lectures on assignments 2 weeks ahead.
4Probably make this not a MUST DO class in the program
5Nothing.

Question:What did you like most about the course professor?
Response Rate:100.00%   (7 of 7)
1he is very interesting and entertaining and also very helpful.
2Very enthusiastic, very knowledgeable, and is easy to approach about concerns or when course content is not understood.
3Nice guy, Just wish he used brightspace and not his website. and didn't call students up to the front of lab classes to then speak loudly about the marks in assignments/tests and embarrass students infront of others.
4His personality and the way he teaches. He never failed once to make me smile. He's probably the best teacher in the school. The way he teaches makes you understand the topics and how they work, with him constantly reminding you to write things down.
5He was energetic.

6He is one with the Linux.
7Energetic and extremely knowledgeable.

Question:What, if anything, could the professor do differently to be of benefit to future students?
Response Rate:85.71%   (6 of 7)
1he is perfect.
2Nothing. He's absolutely perfect the way he is. I wish he could teach the higher level Linux courses as well.
3Nothing, he was great.
4Just do the opposite of what i said above
5Instead of giving us a website with over 100 hyperlinks per page, actually give slides.

Every time I open a hyper link it just takes me to another page.

Slides on Brightspace would be 100% more effective.

6I believe this professor already does whatever he can to benefit his students in the ways that he can.
