Question: | What did you like most about this course? |
Response Rate: | 75.36% (52 of 69) |
1 | very simple and easy to understand |
2 | the system of teaching of professor |
3 | our prof |
4 | nothing |
5 | ls * |
6 | i liked learning that im not a big fan of linux command line prompt |
7 | i liked ians easter egg references to other nerdy things and also the history of the evolution |
8 | foo bar |
9 | assignments |
10 | anything to do with Linux. |
11 | alot |
12 | You learn so much (maybe too much). Using Ian's server was challenging/rewarding and a great way to learn. |
13 | Working on the Linux server through putty rather than a virtual machine for Linux really made me enjoy the class a whole lot more, I personally hate working on virtual machines because I find they are slow and I find them extremely annoying... but Ian set up his course really well. Completing and handing in an assignment is super fulfilling! We were taught to have fun while working in a command line environment and I learned to have a lot more respect for the IT/Tech industry. |
14 | When something is obviously good, it does not need the reasons to be enumerated. |
15 | This course was really interesting. The professor was prepared every class also explained perfectly. This course has extremely diverse example for Linux people. |
16 | This course was one of the best courses I've ever taken in my life. The content was amazing and very well made/designed. All course content covered the topics in a very in depth way. The assignments were amazing and really made it so the information learned could be remembered. The mazes in the assignments were one of the best parts. The assignments and tests were challenging in a good way and really makes one think about every answer. Also the candy during the final exam was nice. |
17 | The teacher. He was very exciting during lectures, making his lectures not boring and easy to learn. |
18 | The programming and theory classes. |
19 | The online course notes were the best thing for me to learn from. |
20 | The material. |
21 | The first couple of weeks |
22 | The fact that its over. Ian was a very hard person to deal with. I did not enjoy. |
23 | The concepts we were learning weren't just presented as abstract ideas. Ian would regularly say things like "Your boss will come to you looking for information and this is how you deliver" to provide real-world examples of how we'd use the things we're learning. It was very helpful. |
24 | The assignments were amazing to help learn how to use linux on a great pace |
25 | The amount of stuff we learned in the short period of time |
26 | Nothing |
27 | Nothing, He does not explain very well and talk very fast and I was not able to follow |
28 | Linux people |
29 | It was well structures and the prof was excellent |
30 | It was one of my favorite courses. The material was new but it was so well explained and teach, that all of those confusing commands actually made sense. |
31 | Ian |
32 | Ian's teaching style is questionable but very effective he is a passionate individual and teaches his course content with nothing less than confidence and passion as well. Ian is a great linux teacher and i will continually value the learning i received from him throughout this course. The assignments challenge students and reinforce the theory content so that it may become useful for later tests and exams. |
33 | Ian was very interactive and made it fun. |
34 | Ian is very interesting. |
35 | Ian Allen is an exceptional teacher, with a passion for what he does. He is incredibly well knowledgeable in his field, and is great at passing that knowledge down to students. His passion is unmatched by any other professor, and he instills that passion in every student willing to accept it. Ian Allen is the best professor possible for this course. |
36 | I liked that the Course had a slow progress through learning the command based interface with the server, I liked the assignment checker programs, I also liked the way scripting was taught through a series of weeks and not just in one, one hour class and expecting us to know how to do error checking and writing scripts for one assignment |
37 | I liked that the linux lab's Ian provided were VERY difficult but at the same time, really doable and rewarding once completed. you actually felt like you were learning. You would finish a lab and be proud of yourself that you were able to complete it even if it took 3 hours or 12 hours. they were really fun. all the information to get through the lab was there on his website. this was honestly the most fun I've ever had doing homework even though some of the assignments seemed scary to do. once you start them and remain persistent, any one can complete it as long as they try hard. |
38 | I like this course. Its job oriented. It was very interesting. I like the way of taking exam because i enjoyed to solve tree and permission questions. |
39 | I like that the course is challenging and very interesting at the same time. |
40 | I like that we dove in into core commands right away |
41 | I like making trees.and giving permissions all concepts are good. |
42 | I like everything about this course because it is very interesting .Even, I like the exam pattern if this course. |
43 | I learned a lot of very annoying details. |
44 | I enjoyed learning about how different yet similar to Windows Linux is. |
45 | I did not like anything about this course, as a level 1 student he went too fast and I found him inpatient at most. His website is unorganized, you would have to go all over the place to find an answer, and on top of it the important stuff like commands are in very small font, really hated that. |
46 | He should try to teach and answer students rather than tricking them or just referring them to the notes. |
47 | Fun |
48 | Everything Ian made it so much fun. It's the best courses in CST. |
49 | Course website provides tons of information. Lab assignments are relevant to course material. |
50 | Coming from a place with zero Linux background, I am glad I was able to learn a lot and grasp various concepts. |
51 | Class started and ended precisely on time. covered the content as described in the syllabus and taught more than that. A good class to be in if you are into Linux |
52 | Being exposed to Linux for the first time during this course Ian's approach is very thorough and detailed to facilitate integration of new users to Linux. |
Question: | How could the course be improved to be of benefit to future students? |
Response Rate: | 69.57% (48 of 69) |
1 | this gives the basic knowledge of every system of the computer |
2 | rm -r * |
3 | nothing |
4 | nothing. again, everything was super fun but very difficult. |
5 | no way it can improve |
6 | maybe remove some of the more intermediate content near the end and slow the overall speed of the course a lot of content is thrown at you for a week and the amount of reading per class is a lot to crunch and take in. |
7 | its good |
8 | it is a tough course for many. The content is foreign to alot.. i would recommed more smaller assignments should given and less larger ones, so students will have more opportunities to learn |
9 | everything |
10 | dev/null |
11 | better explanation |
12 | This course is perfect for future students. It has lots of useful examples and assignments. So, it will be require for future Linux students. |
13 | The website for the course notes is very thorough but could be a bit more user friendly in its searching and indexing. |
14 | The theory portion of this course needs to be a bit earlier in the day. It is hard to absorb all the information thrown at you from 8pm-10pm. The course website is a complete mess! Ian constantly tells us to read all the words. The problem with this is to read all the words and fully understand what he wants from us we have to go through hyperlinks where there are whole pages with information that have more links and so on and so forth. It is very aggravating to have to search a million pages. I just don't have time to read all those words. |
15 | The teacher talking slow and explaining |
16 | The resources should be on the brightspace instead of professor's own private website. |
17 | The information in the online study materials (henceforth : textbook) along with the lectures properly prepare a student for the assignments and tests. This course, takes a student from not knowing the first thing about Linux, to attaining the fundamentals as a foundation upon which to build. However, the textbook would benefit from being rewritten by a professional author for two main reasons. Key ideas are sometimes hard to identify and navigating to those ideas can be cumbersome. The textbook carefully builds a framework to understand the key ideas. By the end of a topic one can understand the main ideas and many details about it. A beginner lacks even the most basic terms so understanding the conclusion of a section may be difficult. The experience is analogous to using complex terms in the definition of a complex term. Experts in a topic are often incapable of appreciating the fact that laypeople do not know their terminology. Instead of using the most concise sentence with the most precise words at a conclusion, it could be helpful to flesh out the idea with a bit of verbosity. As a beginner student progresses though the course, and Linux terms become more accessible, this need will diminish. The textbook feels like the shaker was cracked open while peppering in hints and links to useful information. While reading about how to perform a specific task, much time is spent reading about the mistakes past students have made instead of using more space to explain the idea. It’s frustrating to get lost or confused while reading about what not to do when one does not yet know what to do. Skipping these sections is forbidden by the golden rule: read all the words. The textbook builds complex ideas from the ground up, moving the hints/distractions until after the idea is built will be helpful. |
18 | The assignments were mostly good, but there were some that felt very easy, and others that felt very difficult so one week you'd work for about an hour on an assignment and the next week you'd spend five times that. Maybe properly distributing the workload across the assignments could be looked into. Otherwise it was a very well structured course. |
19 | Some of the labs felt a little long. Some steps could have probably been skipped. |
20 | Slow down the intensity a little bit. For someone with no experience it is difficult to learn in the time period given |
21 | Remove IAN D Allen |
22 | Prof. Allen's course website was a little all over the place and hard to navigate at first. |
23 | Nothing |
24 | Nothing. |
25 | Nothing. |
26 | Non he is a near perfect teacher and should get a raise... |
27 | More hands on involvement for those who have never used linux. |
28 | Maybe the prof could treat the students with a bit more respect and understanding. |
29 | Make it so that 40% of the class doesnt fail the final. |
30 | Make it not as intense. |
31 | It's perfect |
32 | It seems really good as is. |
33 | If the assignments were due on Saturdays or Sundays. |
34 | I think instead of website students should given book otherwise all good.the website is so vast for study otherwise all good. |
35 | I don't know I really enjoyed the class |
36 | His website. He is very good with linux, I just dont think he knows how to teach where people can understand him. |
37 | He should try to teach and answer students rather than tricking them or just referring them to the notes. |
38 | Have it be slowed down a bit. everything seems rushed and it is hard to learn everything in the time the class rushes through. |
39 | Give the answers to students in an easier format. |
40 | For me the course was really great so I don't have anything to say about this right now. |
41 | For future students it will be very beneficial because they can get the jobs in professional fields. |
42 | Everything is perfect. No need of any improved. I find very difficulty in class notes in begining. |
43 | Don't keep assignment on each and every week as there are many assignments to do. |
44 | Course notes might need some editing. Often examples are presented that are made redundant by following examples. |
45 | Course material was great but too wordy. The same information could be given more concisely. The final exam content can be cut into half. The students can be judged for the same material in half of the items; if they know 50 items then they definitely know 100 items. |
46 | Change to a smaller classroom so that the prof isn't on one side of the room the entire time. |
47 | Cater
the course towards people who do not know anything about linux, that
way the people, who do not know anything about linux, can learn
something. Having the lab day on the day the assignment was due was not helpful at all... Yes doing the worksheets help with the labs, but if you include the worksheets as a part of the assignment requirements, the students might be more engaged. |
48 | At first, I really hated that all out work was on his own personal website rather than Brightspace, but I learned to love it and how it is set up. So I can't think of any way to improve the course. |

1 | the way he delivers the information |
2 | the most enthusiastic teacher we have. the most passionate teacher we have. he loves his job which made me love to be in class. Sometimes the content moves too fast so its too hard to follow, but you have to come in focused and ready to write down EVERYTHING in this class, and you'll survive. |
3 | the humour was refreshing, also his experience in the field was quite impressive |
4 | riding a scooter inside the school |
5 | nothing at all |
6 | nothing at all, he talks too fast, barely gives you information, makes you go on his messy website to find answers and half of the time they are difficult to find. |

25 | Passionate about subject matter. Easy to approach. |
26 | Passionate |
27 | Nothing |
28 | Ian's teaching style is questionable but very effective he is a passionate individual and teaches his course content with nothing less than confidence and passion as well. The assignments challenge students and reinforce the theory content so that it may become useful for later tests and exams. |

31 | Ian is very passionate about Linux |
32 | Ian has a great personality. Makes what could be a bland subject much more interesting to learn about. It's very clear he's been doing this for a long time and he's honed the course to provide the best environment for learning. |
33 | I was not happy! |
34 | I thought he was crazy at first, I was right.

41 | I
absolutely loved being in Ian's classes, I had him for my lectures AND
labs so I could always count on him to lend a helping hand when I'm
struggling on a part of any of his assignments. And his explanations
always make me feel like an idiot because it usually ends up being a
really small thing I forgot about that was causing me so many problems, I
just needed Ian to read the question to me and maybe give me a hint and
I would remember the solutions to my Linux problems. (Or I just didn't
read all the words ;D)
Ian is knowledgeable, energetic, amicable, funny and so much more! I hope that by some miracle, he could teach Linux to me throughout the entire program. |
42 | His teaching style is very enthusiastic and engaging. One of our lectures was a two hour period from 8PM-10PM and with any other professor I would've had trouble focusing. Ian shows you examples as he goes through the notes, and then uses his linux server to show you what those commands look like in practice. He'll often type out a command and ask us what the output/result will be. It's a very engaging class. |
43 | His energy |
44 | His energy during lectures. |
45 | He was an entertaining lecturer, and really knew the course subject. |

55 | Friendly, knowledgeable and the course notes online were a wonderful learning tool. |
56 | Everything! |
57 | An expert with years of real world experience is the best kind of teacher. |
Faculty: | IAN ALLEN |
Question: | What, if anything, could the professor do differently to be of benefit to future students? |
Response Rate: | 65.22% (45 of 69) |
1 | talk a little slower during lectures and slow down, it sometimes is hard to follow |
2 | speak slower and offer better reviews |
3 | nothing |
4 | nothing he should get a raise and maybe some gold chains |
5 | not be such a cock |
6 | make the course easier. |
7 | it is a tough course for many. The content is foreign to alot.. i would more smaller assignments should given and less larger ones, so students will have more opportunities to learn |
8 | he is already great and has done a lot for us |
9 | explain more |
10 | amazing professor. I wish more professors were like Ian |
11 | actually teach the course content during the lectures |
12 | Try not to have outdated opinions. I witnessed a few counts of mocking accents toward international students. |
13 | There is nothing for do differently for future students because he is nice teacher and I like everything about him so I dont think it will be change. |
14 | Teach people all the stuff they failed on the final. |
15 | Take the material a little slower |
16 | Speak slowly. And give some to understand and revise previous chapters. |
17 | Slow the course down. |
18 | Rap more |
19 | Nothing. Ian knows what he's doing. |
20 | Not sure. |
21 | No coments |
22 | N/A |
23 | More linux rap |
24 | More follow along examples in class and explaining steps as we go along. |
25 | More 1 on 1 |
26 | Maybe go a little slower. Some days were a little hard to keep up with information and writing notes. I know there is a lot to cover, but I can't learn if I am taking in to much information at once and don't have time to write quick notes about it. |
27 | Maybe give answers when asked rather than telling to read all words, I mean, LINUX PEOPLE ARE LAZY! And also reduce the words in the assignments. |
28 | Make the answers easier to find |
29 | Ian can be a bit rash/ rude and insulting through email and it can give some students anxiety and stress them out and make them feel worse than is actually needed and a simple answer will suffice |
30 | I truly believe Ian is the golden standard that ALL college professors should aspire to be, he made learning a difficult subject fun, fulfilling, and most importantly, informative. Thank you, Ian, for sending me off to my second term in the best way. |
31 | I found it a little hard to follow what he said at times as he would be going through material fairly quickly. |
32 | I don't think I would change anything. Ian does a very good job. |
33 | I don't think so, everything is perfect. The way of his teaching is great. |
34 | How when you ask questions to him, he just points you to his website and tells you to read all the words. |
35 | Hes great. |
36 | He should try to teach and answer students rather than tricking them or just referring them to the notes. |
37 | He is perfect in his way of teaching. |
38 | He is perfect and he gave us amazing assignments. However, professor needs more assignments for future students. The diverse assignments will be improve Linux people. |
39 | He is a genius. I think it's to the school to make him teach more courses, that's how the school could benefit future and current students. |
40 | Fix his website, make it that people can understand how to navigate better on your site. And a little bit slower and don't go off topic. couldn't understand anything this semester with linux level 1. |
41 | Everything |
42 | Bring cake once in a while. |
43 | Be less abusive in emails. If people ask for extensions they may already know they don't have good time management skills and that might be a sore point in their emotional state. Insulting the students time management skills does not make them work better and is not productive to helping the students learn better time management skills. Denying them the extension can help them with that but there is not reason to insult them in the process and doing so may harm their work effort. |
44 | All is good.no need of changes. |
45 | - give more time on assignments and midterms. make sure he wears a helmet and shin-pads next time, safety first. |

13 | Very knowledgeable about Linux. |
14 | This is a good course especially for those students who want to know or explore deeply about the Linux. |
15 | This course is presented in such a way that it seems very difficult at a glance, but once you really start to get into assignments and the notes provided it's easy to see that it is much simpler than it first seems. The information given in notes combined with the assignments and tests provide a challenging but rewarding experience while learning the basics of the Linux operating system. |
16 | There wasn't really anything I liked about this course. |
17 | The way of teaching and explaining things. |
18 | The way it was progressively taught making it easy to learn even though it was challenging. |
19 | The way he engaged students. |
20 | The lecture classes are very fun unlike alot of them as the prof is amazing and keeps you awake. |
21 | The course material was very interesting to learn, the material was also sufficient to learn the basic of Linux and give you access to incredibly useful sources to increase your depth of understanding in the Linux operating system. |
22 | The assignments were an excellent learning tool. |

29 | It's a basic step towards to get knowledge in Linux. |
30 | It introduced to something completely new. It was a challenge but Ian was always went into detail with his lectures. |
31 | Interesting material and great professor. I find the lectures very engaging and have never regretted attending any of them. I would love to continue with Ian in future semesters as unlikely as that may be, he's the best professor I've ever had so far. |
32 | If you can read and pay attention in class you will succeed. His website is a labour of love. It is in depth, but the links can be a bit confusing and it is possible to miss stuff, but everything you need is on his website. |
33 | Ian's enthusiasm. |
34 | Ian's Enthusiasm for linux and the interesting way he approaches problems |
35 | I really liked being able to learn what I was doing for the lab assignments. Ian is an excellent teacher and he really cares about your grades in his course, compared to the other professors. He teaches the material and points us to his website where he keeps his personal notes, instead of letting us and try to figure out what to do for the assignments and google them. |
36 | I loved scripting. I thought it was a perfect combination of everything we learned throughout the year. |
37 | I love that I came into this course not knowing anything about linux and now I have a more proficient knowledge of it. |
38 | I like the way how the course was presented. |
39 | I like how the course teaches us the basic knowledge to operate Linux as an operating system. I really enjoyed this course! |
40 | I like how the course gave a relaxed tone to learning linux in the first few classes. I like how the content was shown to us with lots of detail and lots of examples to practice on as well as see proof that the commands worked and what they did. That is about it. |
41 | I like how useful and secure linux is |
42 | I learned Linux. I had no idea what linux even was before I took this class. |
43 | I felt I learned a lot and the website coupled with the lynda videos helped me understand the linux course better |
44 | I enjoyed the Professors enthusiasm. |
45 | I didn't like his methods at all |
46 | How fun and active Ian’s classes were, he taught the class perfectly and covered exactly what we needed and went over the top to relate our questions to the real world and show how to apply them. |
47 | How different the course it compared to the other courses |
48 | HELLO LINUX PEOPLE! |
49 | Everything is well explained and layed out well |
50 | Controlling the whole pc by using commands and typing less |
51 | Challenging Assignments |
52 | Almost everything, lectures are amazing, assignments are wonderful, learned a lot |
53 | All the course material was online. All the words. I bought one of the recommended texts. Was not disappointed. It makes for a good reference book. |

Question: | How could the course be improved to be of benefit to future students? |
Response Rate: | 74.24% (49 of 66) |
1 | try to give more details for assignments |
2 | nothing |
3 | nothing special |
4 | n/a |
5 | more examples and demos of code during lecture |
6 | maybe give more time for the assignment |
7 | make the lab professors teach us something not only be there to watch us like guards |
8 | i think it is good nothing is to be improved. |
9 | i found the CLS quite confusing to use and felt that it could have been a bit more straightforward, too much information and not enough practise. |
10 | everything is good |
11 | Would be better to have more lab hours. |
12 | Well, for starters, Ian has to make his website either more appealing, or easier to navigate through instead of just throwing us into the deep end with a "Use Ctrl+Click to make a bread crumb trail so you don't get lost." The website may have been fine for the students with hard drive caddies but this is almost 2019 and making me want to visit the website and learn is a real thing that has to be addressed. The amount of content that is stuffed into this first semester is pretty hectic especially near the end of the term. We have so many projects that overlap, classes whose projects overlap other projects and i think that should be taken into account instead of one prof worrying about their program and theirs only. The Course Linux server has to be upgraded to accompany more people doing projects last minute instead of pushing the due dates to later. No matter if there is 1 person on the server or 100 it should be able to adequately handle the task at hand. Also remove the trick questions on the tests and exams, I'm not here to spoofed by a double negative and get the question wrong, I'm here to learn the content and make sure that the content i am learning is getting reinforced with the tests and expanding my knowledge of the subject. |
13 | USE A BETTER COURSE WEBSITE. |
14 | This course needs a huge improvement mainly because of how professor Ian Allen teaches his students. The course material on his server that he uses to teach us and what we use to do our assignments is equivalent to going through a complicated maze. It's very tedious and has discouraged me greatly from wanting to continue to learn Linux. Another issue on his server is how he makes what should otherwise be simple instructions into complicated wording of the English language. When he gave us bonus assignments to boost our midterm marks, his assignment instructions involved having to go through the tedious process of writing each question we got wrong on the midterm, writing the right answer, finding where we can find the right answer on his course server, and explaining why we got each question wrong. It would have been a lot better if we had makeup tests like some of our other professors from different courses have done. One thing that greatly disappointed me was how we weren't allowed to work on assignments in groups. This doesn't make sense to me at all as we were encouraged by our other professors from different courses that we can work in groups on assignments as long as we don't plagiarize. Another thing that bothers me is his attitude, most of the time when I would ask him a question he would get annoyed or cold with me which discouraged me from ever wanting to ask him anything again. I am not fond of his teaching methods as he gives us too much information in little time and it is difficult to keep up. He gets frustrated if we don't understand what I'm assuming he considers to be simple concepts. Lastly, I was very disappointed when he stopped doing a full two hour class review of midterm 2 and the final exam. For the first midterm he did do a full two hour review which greatly helped me but for some reason he greatly reduced the review time of midterm 2 to 10-15 minutes and 1 hour for the final exam. There is a reason why the class average is low, why many students in this course are either dropping out, failing, or not getting a higher grade than they normally would. I'm not saying that this course should be easier, I'm saying there needs to be another way of teaching this course. I believe future students could benefit from having a different professor teaching Linux. |
15 | The site could be made less congested |
16 | The only thing I think needs improvement is the website. It's the only course we have that has material outside of Brightspace, and its just a maze of hyperlinks. |
17 | The links can lead to a barrage of tabs making you forget what you were trying to learn in the first place. Sending you in an Alice in Wonderland-esque rabbit hole of information. |
18 | Teaching slower lots of my peers complain that his teaching method is to fast. |
19 | Taking less time to do useful work |
20 | Promote group work and study groups instead of having people struggle on their own. |
21 | Probably make so theres a little more practice for the material as some people struggle alot like myself and would like if there was more practice for some assignments to help prepare me for tests and etc |
22 | Nothing |
23 | Nothing |
24 | Nothing. This is an excellent course. I came in with the mindset that I wouldn't like this class at all, and I left wanting more of the class. |
25 | None. |
26 | No improvement required. |
27 | Narrow down weekly readings, too many links for different pages, especially for 1 week (combined with Networking Fundamentals, not enough time to read material for all courses) |
28 | More lecture hours with Ian. Lab periods with other instructors are a waste of time. |
29 | Make the lecture class right before the midterm dedicated to solving practice questions, You did it for the first midterm but not the second. Grades would have been better if you had done a problem solving class before the second midterm. |
30 | It does not need to. |
31 | If Ian would actually post our calculated grades on Brightspace and actually make that information available, it would be of tremendous benefit to students. It shouldn't be a state secret. We should know approximately what mark we have and if we're passing or failing, so we know what mark to aim for. (also for the overachievers among us: How harder do we need to try to get that A+?) Just a general idea would be nice. Every other course has it, why not this one? |
32 | Ian's
site is a wonderful resource, but a pain in the *** to navigate. When
an assignment or studying become a scavenger hunt that can last hours it
turns you off of his learning style. * Inappropriate words were found and removed from this response. |
33 | I think we covered scripting way to quick. |
34 | I think the overall presentation of the information for the course (the website) could use some cleaning up. The information is all there but it can be difficult at times to find or read it. |
35 | I think that teach student meetings should be improved. Also my lab teacher had a hard time explaining any material, which made the course more difficult to understand. |
36 | I think the course has all necessary ingredients to be the best course. |
37 | I think this course cover too many things in just four months so in my point of view some of students need more time to cover these all things. |
38 | He needs to incorporate the website into Brightspace. |
39 | Have someone who knows basic web development create a better website for the notes. They were by far the worst part of the course. When trying to find the resources necessary to do the work is the most annoying part of an assignment, you need to reevaluate your methods. |
40 | Have a more streamlined website that is more straightforward |
41 | For my point of view, this course will really help the student to get the best knowledge in IT industry. |
42 | Can't really think of anything. The course materials are pretty complete and have been used successfully for many years, and have been adjusted as needed. |
43 | Better website |
44 | Better infrastructure to ensure the cls is not slowed down as badly during peak times (on the due date of assignments when everyone is using it) |
45 | BETTER NOTE TAKING PLAN! LESS CONFUSING WEBSITE/NOTES. JAMS 500,000 WORDS INTO ONE NOTE PAGE. IMPOSSIBLE TO FOLLOW IN LECTURE. |
46 | Another professor and more reasonable work |
47 | A more realistic approach for assignments |

18 | The way he teaches is really really good |
19 | The professor was very energetic and knowledgeable about the material. When asked question he gave examples to supplement the students understanding of his answer. |
20 | The professor goes into great detail when going over course material. |
21 | The professor is extremely helpful |
22 | The class is not dull that is for sure. |
23 | Nothing. |
24 | Lots of energy. |
25 | Ian's teaching methods and his site that has access to all of the information we will even need. Great teacher as long as you READ ALL THE WORDS! |
26 | Ian's energy is unmatched by any professor |
27 | Ian was entertaining and kept my interest during long lectures |
28 | Ian is such a great teacher, you can clearly tell he loves his job and he is clearly a true master at linux. He teaches incredibly well and does so with a way that makes class enjoyable and so the content being taught stays with the student. |
29 | Ian is an incredibly knowledgeable and passionate teacher when it comes to Linux. He uses very engaging lecture techniques to allow students to learn actively while he teaches new material or reviews things that have been covered previously. His assignments are challenging and worded in ways that make you think instead of just going through the motions. All of the course assessments (tests, assignments, quizzes) are written in ways that make students think about what the answers will be instead of being able to memorize everything word for word. Overall Ian is an incredible teacher who knows the material well and does an outstanding job sharing his knowledge with students in a variety of ways to help with their own understanding. |
30 | Ian is a great professor that knows linux inside and out! He keeps the class engaged and helps with their knowledge comprehension. |
31 | Ian energy is unmatched and takes a boring topic and engages students to do better not only in linux but life. If anything I can take from this course its to read all the words. The details are really important |
32 | Ian Allen is the best professor I've ever had. He lives and breathes Linux, and has been an expert in it since pretty much when it came out with his background in UNIX. He also gives very good general advice, such as the importance of reading "all the words", and the importance of working smarter such as by eliminating distractions and knowing when to take a break or switch tasks. He's very encouraging to those who care about the course, whether or not they're getting amazing grades, as long as they're putting in effort and trying to understand and improve. He's also just very experienced in the computer field in general. He's been doing email, the internet, and later the World Wide Web at an advanced level since pretty much when they became available commercially, if not earlier. If learning Linux is something that you want to do, he's pretty much ideal for teaching it in my opinion. |
33 | I really enjoyed the professor. He was very engaging and made the course interesting. |
34 | I liked his energy when we first met him and the amount of knowledge he had about Linux and the Unix. He would make you laugh sometimes and didn't really put down wrong ideas which is good. |
35 | I like how our professor Mr. Ian Allen actively interacts with the students and liven up the lectures. His website really helped me get through this semester and learned a lot about Linux. I am happy taking this course! You're the best Ian. |
36 | I didn't really like him. |
37 | His willingness and curiosity to guide us about the course |
38 | His jokes |
39 | His humor. |
40 | His enthusiasm to teach the material and ensure his students really learned what he was teaching. |
41 | His engagement. He was tough but fair. |
42 | His energy and knowledge |
43 | His attitude. He would always start the class with a big "GOOD MORNING, LINUX PEOPLE!" His ability to teach is amazing. I came in not knowing a thing about Linux, and I left wanting to learn more from him. I also had him in Lab class, and he's down to Earth with his students. If you weren't doing too well in the course, he would sit down and talk to you personally about he. I feel that he really cares if we pass or fail. He's really kind and funny. I wish I could have him in the future. |
44 | He's very knowledgeable about Linux and has a quirky sense of humour. |
45 | He's easily one of the best profs this level. You could tell he does care about us and our success. Credit where credit is due here. All the materials you could ever need are online, Ian provides all the words to read and study. If you don't do well, it is your fault for NOT READING ALL THE WORDS. |
46 | He knows exactly how to get the students to concentrate in class. |
47 | He knew his material and how to teach it. He made us problem solve rather than just giving us the answer. |
48 | He is wonderful. |
49 | He is very energetic and friendly. |
50 | He is special, very smart and leads the classes very interesting, involving students. |
51 | Exciting, realistic, and extremely knowledgeable about the topic |
52 | Engaged, shows examples of why things do not work, why they do work, excellent teaching method |
53 | Can be funny. He lives his course. He is dedicated. |

Question: | What, if anything, could the professor do differently to be of benefit to future students? |
Response Rate: | 66.67% (44 of 66) |
1 | rely less on the CLS and try to cater more to the needs of the students. I felt lost pretty much all semester and sometimes felt like i was being treated like a child with the trick questions connected to instructions and the "read all the words" motto. I think that this course only caters to one specific learning style. for those people who find the CLS confusing and can't use it well have almost no alternative and no chance to do good in the course. |
2 | nothing |
3 | nothing |
4 | not to go so fast during lectures |
5 | nN/A |
6 | n/a |
7 | maybe promote group work in a way that would help people learn, as I found this the hardest part of the course is struggling through the material on my own. |
8 | in my point of view he is the best and good so he dosen't have to do any differently. |
9 | he could be more kind for students when they ask him help kindly |
10 | by changing his course notes because it has so many links inside each. |
11 | While I'm not sure everyone would agree, I do think the way that questions are worded can at times be far more complicated than they maybe need to be but I still find that it's more than worth it to have harder questions to help better understand. |
12 | Too many trick questions. Too EXTRA! Super long Course Information Quiz, Answer questions straight up. It helps everyone. Just show me how to solve the problem so I can learn and attempt on my own. No "directing to the website". Just show me how its done, then i'll have my go at it. |
13 | This course needs a huge improvement mainly because of how professor Ian Allen teaches his students. |
14 | Third party resources would be helpful for situations in which Ian's course notes do not sufficiently help you understand the material. |
15 | There are a lot of things I could say (generally not good) but I'll take the diplomatic approach on this one: I find Ian is great but he just does some things in the wrong way and handles some things in the wrong way. He is a scary person when angered. He should be more understanding and have better listening skills.
I do not agree with Ian holding our exam marks hostage unless we prove we filled out the course evaluation. This is already a stressful time of year. We are stressed enough and this is not helping. Everyone should know how well (or not well) they did, regardless.
|
16 | Teaching more slowly and changing certain ways he convays information. It's a hit or miss for most students. Lots of peers I know complain about it. I find the way he teaches to be fine. |
17 | Take more time covering scripting |
18 | Stay the way he is! He's the best teacher by far. |
19 | See Questions #8. I have combined both 11&8 together. |
20 | Professor Ian should teach higher levels of the program. :) |
21 | Probably not call people in the middle of labs and talk about peoples marks infront of everyone, especially if you did poorly on tests it just embarrasses you in front of everyone |
22 | Nothing |
23 | Nothing. |
24 | Nothing. |
25 | Nothing really. Yo go Ian |
26 | Nothing at all |
27 | Not talk about Chinese hackers trying to get into his server. I find it rude to be mentioning that Chinese people are always hacking into his server, If anything I'd find that to be racist |
28 | Not harass the students to do the course evaluation on the course Linux server. Everything else is perfectly fine. Excellent teaching methods. I have never been so motivated to learn Linux. Thank you. |
29 | N/a |
30 | Make material on 1-2 pages per week/assignment, found myself with 5-8 different tabs open for 1 week of content constantly |
31 | I think that the course professor could make the notes a bit easier to follow. I find it difficult to read the content in a efficient way. |
32 | I read the feedback that previous students have offered. In my opinion, he needs to apply the feedback to the teaching style.
I would also like to see a Skills based assessment for this program instead of Midterms and final exams that offer 1 minute per question. Often the words can trip a student up if they slow down to read them...which may take more than a minute. It seems illogical, but its also a test so I get it. Regardless, I feel a SBA for this course should be introduced. |
33 | I found this course and assignments very hard in general. Ian seems to always try to mislead students with tricky spelling and wordings, and occasionally goes off on a tangent about things that are not really useful. There was one class where he went on about people trying to hack his server (at least 25 mins) , while he speeds over other more important content such as VI and setting up our bash profile. (10 mins max on this) |
34 | I don't thing so professor have to change something. |
35 | I don't know. |
36 | Honestly, I don't know because the professor has done a great job. |
37 | Honestly I don’t think there’s anything on the teaching aspect, just the website could be made easier for people to navigate |
38 | His Marking could be a bit more lenient |
39 | He sorted information in websites in the proper format so students can easily understand the whole concepts without interpreting. |
40 | He is the best. |
41 | Fix his website, focus on the information at hand instead of moving ahead. |
42 | Can't really think of anything. Linux is not for everybody, so I think there will always be a subset of students who are unable or unwilling to handle the material no matter what Professor Allen does. |
43 | Better teaching methods and strategies, as neither catered to my learning abilities. Update learning materials and servers that will allow all users on without crashing said course server. |
44 | Actually answer emails professionally and not in a sarcastic, petty tone. If a student asks a simple question, do not simply respond with, "It's in the course notes." It is the job of the professor to reply as best as possible to help the student in their time of need. Many students may not understand the course notes word for word, and so a professor's explanation in an email would help with that. Ian is very passive, childish, and unprofessional when replying to emails. He expects students to follow a strict guideline for email structure, format, and content, and yet when Ian responds through his Linux platform, the email arrives in a very difficult to read non-rich text format that is plain confusing. Adapt to the new age of technology, and help students appropriately when they ask for it directly. |

Response Rate: | 76.92% (10 of 13) |
1 | the prof was very good and clearly cared for the students |
2 | just doing anything involving Linux I like |
3 | Very Interactive and students seemed to enjoy from the beginning. |
4 | The work was challenging. |
5 | The most thing I like about this course is that we learn how to find files, copy and move files very easily |
6 | The fact that we used a remote terminal. |
7 | Nothing |
8 | Learning something new. |
9 | It was a very challenging course and was the hardest of my six courses this semester by far. There was a lot of work in this course but if you did the readings and 'read all the words' then you could make it through the course. He does offer make up assignments in case you didn't do well on an assignment of test so that is a really great thing. You really have to be a master with time management to survive the course with a good mark. |
10 | Everything |
Question: | How could the course be improved to be of benefit to future students? |
Response Rate: | 84.62% (11 of 13) |
1 | nothing |
2 | longer due dates |
3 | abit more slower paste when it comes to scripting for people that never have done it |
4 | Well, I have found that the only way to succeed in this course is if you have a strong reading ability. I struggled with this course because you learned everything from reading. As a hands-on learner, this was hard, even in the lectures he would be talking and writing things so fast without explaining what anything does. I think that this course has probably been taught the same way for many years but I think that it should change so that people like me without great reading skills can still perform well in the course. I also think some of the assignments are overly complex and hard for a first-year Linux course. I was expecting to learn about the Linux GUI but no it was all commands and scripts. |
5 | Unsure. |
6 | They can learn how to do Linux |
7 | The online textbook/website could be easier to understand. Layout is fine. Wording could be better. |
8 | Please take this advice since I suffered in this course due to this!! Please remove the content from his website and move it to brightspace. His website is very hard to follow and it seems at some points there's almost to much information (overkill). His website is overkill to the max. So much information and hyperlinks to other places that its overwhelming and is hard to follow because its all words. I didn't really enjoy this class as much as the others due to his website. |
9 | I think maybe an additional lab period every week might benefit the students because it is a lot to learn if you have no experience with Linux in the past |
10 | I don't think much can be improved. Everything is reasonable and resources are provided effectively. |
11 | Better explained assignments, he expects you to know all the commands unlike other class where you practice the commands thus getting to know them better. |

2 | ian's rambunctiousness |
3 | Very enthusiastic, funny and thus makes lectures go by so smoothly. I feel more involved in the class and that I can listen. I can stay focused for his 3 hour lectures due to this. I wish all my professors had this much enthusiasm. He is also very good at helping. During Labs he will notice whas wrong if you have a question but instead of telling you exactly what he rather guides you to the answer which I like more. |
4 | Overall good professor |
5 | Ian was an excellent teacher. He was always very helpful in the lab and always gave an entertaining lecture. You can feel that he actually cares about each and every student and they aren't just a 'number' to him. It really makes you want to do well in his course |
6 | His very funny and interesting to listen to. |
7 | His personality. |
8 | He made lectures engaging and entertaining. |
9 | He is eccentric and loves the topic. In labs he helps you and gives you feed back on what you are doing, always willing to help. |

11 | Friendly and passionate about the subject matter. |
