2 Purpose of this AssignmentIndexup to index

Do not print this assignment on paper! On paper, you cannot follow any of the hyperlink URLs that lead you to hints and course notes relevant to answering a question.

This assignment is based on your weekly Class Notes.

  1. Create a “head shot” image to help your professor know your name. Name the file exactly as given below.
  2. Read excerpts of research to understand the bad effects of multi-tasking and distractions on learning.
  3. Consider making changes to your own study environment to avoid multi-tasking and promote memory.
  4. Answer three questions using the exact format and labelling described below.
  5. Create a Plain Text (.txt) file containing the three answers. Name the file exactly as given below.
  6. Submit (upload) the two files (the image and the text file) as course work to Brightspace into the correct Assignments upload area.

3 Part A: Head-Shot Photo Image: abcd0001-headshot.jpgIndexup to index

The image you create in this section (and later upload) will be seen only by your instructor. The image will not be available in public.

  1. Create or select a clear head shot picture of you. (If you don’t have a clear head-shot picture, ask a friend to take one for you.) The head shot should show your face clearly.

The image file must be a JPEG (JPG) format image. The image must be no smaller than 300 pixels in height or width and no larger than 1024 pixels in height or width. The file size should be less than 1 MB.

abcd0001-headshot.jpg

  1. Preparation for uploading the head-shot image file to Brightspace: Re-name the head-shot image file on your computer to be abcd0001-headshot.jpg where the text abcd0001 userid is replaced by your own eight-character Algonquin College (Brightspace) userid.

The image file name must start with your own eight-character userid and end with a four-character .jpg extension. All the letters in the name are lower-case. The image file name will be exactly 21 characters long.

There are no spaces in the image file name and no UPPER CASE letters. There is only one correct way to spell the word headshot. The ninth character is a hyphen - not an underscore _. For full marks, be accurate.

You will upload your abcd0001-headshot.jpg head-shot image file to Brightspace later in this assignment.

4 Part B: Multi-Tasking Considered Harmful: abcd0001-assignment01.txtIndexup to index

For full marks, follow these directions exactly.

READ ALL THE WORDS! below before you start to answer any questions.

  1. In the Course Notes, read the single web page of This is your Brain essay excerpts. (You do not have to follow any of the hyperlinks on that page, but feel free to also read some of the original essays from which these quotes are taken.)

abcd0001-assignment01.txt

  1. After reading the above web page, create and open a new plain text file on your computer. This new file must have a 25-character file name similar to abcd0001-assignment01.txt but where the text abcd0001 userid is replaced by your own eight-character Algonquin College (Brightspace) userid.

There are no spaces in the file name and no UPPER CASE letters. The characters after the word assignment are the digits zero and one, not a letter O or a letter l. There is only one correct way to spell the word assignment. The ninth character is a hyphen - not an underscore _. For full marks, be accurate.

  2. In that new plain text file, answer the following three questions in your own words (no copy and paste):

    • (B-3a): Given that studies show that multi-tasking makes it harder for your brain to remember what you have been doing (see the readings), in what ways does your method of doing school work and homework suffer from multi-tasking?

In the file, label the start of your answer to this question with the exact six-character label (B-3a) (including the parentheses) in the text file. That label contains two letters and one digit.

    • (B-3b): How would it be possible for you to single-task your schoolwork, to remember it better come exam time (and job interview time)?

In the file, label the start of your answer to this question with the exact six-character label (B-3b) (including the parentheses) in the text file. That label contains two letters and one digit.

    • (B-3c): Do you find that your brain has been trained to “process information rather than understand or even remember it”? (As an example: When given an assignment question, do you Google for the answer every time, or do you remember the answer and write down what you remember?)

In the file, label the start of your answer to this question with the exact six-character label (B-3c) (including the parentheses) in the text file. That label contains two letters and one digit.

Answer these three questions in your own words; you may not copy and paste from anywhere else. (Do not write your answer in a word processor and then try to copy and paste it into the text file! The format will almost surely not be correct.)

There are no right answers, but no marks will be given to short answers that don’t address the question fully. (Hint: Single-sentence answers do not answer the question fully.)

Each of the three answers can be made up of long lines of text (with no word wrap), or each of the three answers can be made up of shorter lines of text (e.g. less than 80 columns wide is good) with blank lines between paragraphs.

Use the exact labels above to start each of the three answers.

  3. Do not copy any of the essays or web page or any of this assignment question material into your file as part of your answer. Only include your three written answers, each beginning with the correct label text. Just your answers! Do not copy any of these questions.

  4. For full marks, make sure you label the start each of the three answers exactly as shown above.

You will upload your abcd0001-assignment01.txt plain text file to Brightspace later in this assignment.

Notes:

WARNING: If you use copy-and-paste from a word processor (e.g. MSWord) or enter text using a foreign language setting on your computer (e.g. Chinese), you are almost certain to include non-ASCII characters in your text file (such as Smart Quotes) that will lower your mark. Set your computer to use English and do not use a word processor to write the answers. Type directly into Notepad without copy-and-paste.

5 Brightspace Submission upload methodIndexup to index

After completing the above assignment work, you should now have two (2) files with specific names ready for uploading to Brightspace:

  1. Your own head-shot image file. This file must have a 21-character file name, as given above. Use the exact name.

  2. Your plain text file containing three answers that you wrote yourself without any copy-and-paste. This file must have a 25-character file name, as given above. Use the exact name.

Make sure the two files have the correct names on your computer before you continue. Count the characters in the names to be sure!

Warning: The fake place-holder userid abcd0001 must never appear in any file name you submit. Always replace it with your own userid.

5.1 Upload the two files from your local computer to BrightspaceIndexup to index

Follow these directions to upload the files from your local computer to the correct Assignment area on Brightspace before the due date:

  1. On your local computer use a web browser to log in to Brightspace at https://brightspace.algonquincollege.com/ and go to the Brightspace page for this course.
  2. Open the Content tab at the top of the page, then open the Assignments area in the left side-bar menu, then scroll down to find and open the coloured A-01 Assignment #01 link for this assignment. The Assignment page should look similar to this (image).
    • Do NOT use the Activities button to open the assignment!
    • Do NOT use the Upcoming events link to open the assignment!
    • Use ONLY: Content, Assignments, A-01 Assignment #01
  3. Below the Instructions for this assignment you will find a Submissions area containing a Drop files here, or click below! dotted box containing an Upload button (and other buttons). Use drag-and-drop or the Upload button twice to find and attach your two assignment files from your local computer.
    1. Make sure each assignment file has the correct name on your local computer before you select it.
    2. Select both the assignment files for upload, one after the other. Exactly two files. Do not select any other file names.
    3. Make sure the files are not zero size.
    4. Do not use the Record or Choose Existing buttons.
    5. Do not enter any Comments. Leave Comments empty. Send me comments by EMail.
  4. After you have selected both files for inclusion in the Drop files here box, the Drop files here box should look similar to this (image).
  5. When both file names are in the Drop files here box, scroll down to the bottom of the page and use the Submit button to actually upload your two selected files to Brightspace.
  6. After Submit, the two uploaded files will now appear directly under the Submission heading, and the Submissions box will look similar to this. You will also receive a confirmation email with the names of the files that were uploaded. Make sure you uploaded both files.
  7. In your web browser, under the Submissions heading, click on and open each newly submitted file to make sure each file has the correct contents and is not empty (zero size). Make sure to submit only two files; do not submit any other file names.

5.2 Uploading the assignment againIndexup to index

You can not delete your submitted files from the assignment, but you can revise your assignment files and upload the two files into the assignment again as many times as you like. I only grade the most recent assignment files submitted before the due date. (See the Course Introduction for details about late assignments.)

If you want to submit a second (or third…) copy of the assignment, make sure you always upload both files, even if you only update one of them. Always upload both files any time you submit.

The Submissions box will show each submission and the list of files you submitted in each submission. Always upload both files any time you submit.

5.3 Verify and record the file upload on BrightspaceIndexup to index

Verify that Brightspace has received your submission:

  1. After using the Submit button, you will see the files you uploaded listed under Submissions along with any previous uploaded submissions for this assignment. You may upload an assignment multiple times.
  2. Verify that your latest (newest) submission has the correct file names. If either name is wrong, fix the name and do another submission and upload both files.
  3. Do not enter any comments when you upload an assignment.
  4. Click on each uploaded file name to open and view it. Make sure each uploaded file has the correct contents!
  5. Save a screen capture of the Submissions section onto your local computer, showing the newly uploaded assignment. The screen capture should look similar to this.
  6. Brightspace will also send you a confirmation email that you have uploaded the assignment. Save the email message as proof that you uploaded all the required files.
