================================== Updated marks for Research Project ================================== -IAN! idallen@ncf.ca Some of you worked hard on your Research Project; but, you were in a team with someone who plagiarized material from the Internet, resulting in a mark of zero for everyone in the project. Team projects have benefits and liabilities. If you treat a group project as if it were five individual assignments, and you don't assess the quality and originality of the work produced by your team-mates, problems like this may happen. A team project is *not* five individual assignments. You are marked as a team. In consultation with the IQS department, I am offering an opportunity for some of you to upgrade your mark. Make an appointment to see me, and bring with you the original work that you did on the research project. I will assess your original contributions and give you partial credit for your own, original (not-copied) work. For those of you who did plagiarize from the Internet; but, who were unaware that copying sentences and phrases was an academic offense - please read the Appendix to this note. Copying is an academic offense. You may also obtain partial credit for your work if you rewrite your plagiarized material to include proper format citations for all the sources of the words that you copied. See the Appendix for details. Never copy words from the Internet and use them as if they were your own. My timetable is on the Web - please see it for directions on how to arrange to meet with me to upgrade your mark. ======== Appendix ======== What is plagiarism in DAT2330? A) The course web page says, on the first page: http://www.algonquincollege.com/~alleni/dat2330/02w/ Warning! Credit your Sources! Many students are unaware that copying material from other sources (especially the Internet) without proper credit is an academic offence called plagiarism. For details, see: http://www.algonquincollege.com/~alleni/plagiarism.html Students submitting research projects containing plagiarized material will be charged with academic fraud by the College and given a grade of zero. Don't let this happen to you! (I emphasised the above item in the first week of classes.) B) In the specifications for the research project itself, I said: http://www.algonquincollege.com/~alleni/dat2330/02w/researchProject.htm Attribute and cite, with source, author, and date, your use of copied material and ideas that are not your own. Use of copied material without attribution will be treated as plagiarism. (The Learning Resource Centre discusses the issue of research report plagiarism; you must read it if you use material from the Internet.) Research reports containing material copied from the Internet will be worth zero marks. Plagiarism is copying someone else's words and using them as if they were your own. =========================== How can I avoid plagiarism? How can I properly cite material I want to copy? ================================================ To avoid charges of plagiarism, every idea, paragraph, sentence, or phrase that you use that is not in your own words must be cited with source, author, and date. You must cite and attribute anything that you cut and paste from someone else. For an example of how to cite words and ideas that are not your own, visit this link: http://www.algonquincollege.com/lrc/staff/plagiarism.html and look at these links in that document: "How Not To Plagiarize": http://www.utoronto.ca/writing/plagsep.html "Plagiarism: What It is and How to Recognize and Avoid It." http://www.indiana.edu/~wts/wts/plagiarism.html
