Chapter 23 Exercises

Read Chapter 23 of the Unix text and work on the Unix system. Make sure you can answer the following questions:

Chapter 23     User Environment

(Pages 992-1001 only)

23.1     Work up to page 997.  Log out and log back on to the system. Write down the displayed messages that were placed in .login, .profile, .cshrc, and .kshrc.  Are you clear on which files are used at which times?

23.2     After question 23.1 is done,

              a. start a child C shell, what messages are displayed? Exit the C shell,
              b. start a child Bourne shell, what messages are displayed? Exit it,
              c. start a child Korn shell, what messages are displayed? Exit it.
