Recall that there is the concept of FND (Failure no Deferral) that can be used in the case that students do not complete the term work adequately. Essentially if a student misses the final exam, one of two grades should be awarded: ABS or FND ... not a normal F. ABS should be awarded if the term work is suitably completed, otherwise FND should be awarded. If a student does write the exam at a satisfactory level and the term work is satisfactory then compute the grade normally. A+ to F. If a student does write the exam at a satisfactory level and the term work is not satisfactory, award and FND at your discretion. If the exam is written to an unsatisfactory level, then an F or an FND should be awarded based on the term work. Attached is a flow chart to help better understand the process. Recall that the concept of satisfactory is specified in your course outline. For example, some might state that you must pass the final exam in order to pass the course. This puts satisfactory at a 50% score on the final exam. If your course outline did not specify any criteria on what constitutes satisfactory performance on the exam, you should assume that writing it is satisfactory performance. And finally, if you do award and FND, please fill out some information in the comment section. This little bit of effort now will save you a lot of grief later should the student apply for a deferral or appeal the grade. This extra information lets the Registrar's office handle the request without having to bother you later. If you need any clarifications, please advise or come see me. Anthony
