Question: What did you like most about this course?
Response Rate: 100.00%   (31 of 31)
1 Allen's enthusiasm for teaching Linux
2 Enjoyed the Course Linux server as well as command line work.
3 i liked learning about linux
4 It is out of my comfort zone and therefore more challenging.
5 That the topic is useful for system administration. It also gets students into the mindset of an admin.
6 Learning to effectively use different commands.
7 Learning linux and using fedora 12 on vmware, and listening to the teachers awesome crazy stories.
8 No comment.
9 How the professor explained the material. He combined a good use of humor, and effective demonstrations of the Linux OS and its use.
10 Even though I learned a great deal of Linux commands and arguments, plus more, my favorite aspect about this course was the prof. Mr Ian Allen was by far the best all round professor I have known. And Kieth Poore, he was awesome.
11 As a new user of Linux, I appreciated the hands on labs and assignments that allowed me to grasp most of the main concepts with ease.
12 It was something I expected
13 the course highly entertain and i love to every class and doing the Linux commands.
14 The ew operatig system to explore. It is very creative, ad very entertaning.
15 *
16 The subject of Linux had always been very daunting for me. Mr. Allen, with his humour and enthusiasm, were able to make the subject able to be learned relatively painlessly by someone as easily frustrated by change as myself. As a formerly thoroughbred Windows person, (rehabilitated may be a more appropriate term) changes simply dont come as big as they do in the switch to Linux, and with my (at the time seemingly) limited resources, I had had little ability to experiment as I had with Windows, which is how I learned most of my craft pre-college. Mr. Allen made the subject less frustrating, and the college itself showed me ways to make use of my current resources that allow for even more experimentation than I had even thought possible, let alone wise. And I suspect that the best is yet to come.
17 Learning all of the different commands.
18 Everything.
19 I've always wanted to learn more about Linux but never had the time or resources.
20 Excellent content. Very enjoable.
21 It was fun.
22 He was very thorough in all of his teachings.
23 learning to use linux command prompt
24 got to learn about a whole new world that i didnt know existed

- the professors learning style

25 For someone who had never seen Linux before this course was very challenging. I enjoyed the challenge and learning my way around a Linux command line.
26 The Editing drives.
27 this course is very high level course, like for intelligent and bright students. the thing i like most in this course is that i learned something different . i enjoyed this course so much.
28 the stuff i was teached in the lab and theory
29 Learning something different. I had neve rused linux before, and it was a great introduction.
30 The labs made the material easier to understand
31 It was fun and exciting

Question: How could the course be improved to be of benefit to future students?
Response Rate: 100.00%   (31 of 31)
1 PERHAPS make the tests a little easier. We're already learning a massive amount of information, tests with such complexity are very hard to study for.
2 more obvious connection of labs/lectures
3 nothing its good
4 I'm not sure.
5 I can't really answer that, other than to say extending the semester. This course, CST8182 and CST8202 are heavy courses and running them concurrently will guarantee a large number of students dropping one or all of the courses.
6 Spend more time on certain subjects, possibly.
7 More time spent on review for mid term 2.
8 No comment.
9 Nothing. I think the course works well as it is currently.
10 There isn't much to improve on. Nothing that comes to mind anyway.
11 I don't believe the course needs to be adjusted.
12 More structure to teaching.
13 there is nothing to change about the course.
14 The only thing that can be improved is the format that Ian did for Lab 10 and Lab 12. He combined the Worksheet and the Lab work in one. I hope he can do this in the future.
15 *
16 The course documents are well written, but the professors repeated insistence that we read them all down to the letter becomes harder to bear as they themselves become more complex. I understand the need to read all the words, but those words should be made easier to read in response, should they not? Thats my only real gripe, and its actually quite minor; it would also be nice if it covered the installation of Linux programs, (allowing student learning/experimentation, perhaps on a clone of the VM to allow a maintained clean install on another VM.) but thats about it.
17 It was all good.
18 N/A
19 Can't think of anything.
20 Not Much. I found this course to be both challenging and rewarding
21 Nothing. The course is good
22 The labs should be more focused on what could be on the tests and exams. If you have been doing the labs and getting 100 in them, it still won't help you in the tests and exams. Worksheets should be more integrated with labs so you get marks for what you've learned.
23 none that i can think of
24 nothing
25 No suggestions, excellent course.
26 A real textbook or make the website a bit easier to find topics. Example would be when looking for what cd does you need to find what week before you could find the page it is on.
27 The professor should discuss the assignment in the lab class so that it becomes easy for the sudents to work upon them.
28 to have more time to do the assignments and more tiem to study for midterms and more theory and lab classes
29 More technical lab work, less reliance on simply remembering the syntax and command lists. Allowance of a command list notebook during exams would also be reccommended as there are over twenty seven thousand commands in linux with as many options. Not practical to memorize what they all do in such a short time frame.
30 More review before the exams
31 There is very little that I can think of to improve this course

Faculty: ALLEN, IAN D
Question: What did you like most about the course professor?
Response Rate: 100.00%   (31 of 31)
1 Easily the most charismatic and fun professor in the program so far. Hilarious sarcasm. Very knowledgeable. Always available to help in labs.
2 Ian knows everything about Linux, it was very nice having a prof that you feel very confident knows everything that is beneficial to your learning. Ian keeps things interesting, and not dull. I would be impressed if anyone managed to come close to falling asleep in Ians classes, even if you are not interested in the content presented, Ians personality alone has enough to keep you tuned in.
3 he is great, aalways wants students to ask question. wants to help you learn
4 He truly knows his stuff and enjoys his job which makes it easier to learn.
5 Ian is a consumate nerd, and that is not at all a bad thing. He's extremely knowledgeable, and willing to help students do the work to get the key concepts. If anything else, he's inspired students to go full-throttle into system administration or to go full-on into Algonquin's bread-making program, no mean feat.
6 Always looking to help with assignments.
7 Very friendly, very helpful, awesome crazy stories.
8 No comment.
9 He has a great knowledge base and is very good at conveying the information in a fun and interesting manner.
10 Ian is extremely charismatic and energetic. He is funny but serious when he needs to be. He brings LIFE into class with him. It is never dull with I.D. Allen teaching. Oh, he is brilliant too.
11 The professor was extremely spirited and passionate about what he taught. This made the learning experience enjoyable and got the students excited about the course.
12 His enthusiasm
13 professor Ian makes the class a must go lecture as he is always mentioning the new ideas in class and very helpful with the trouble we have in any factor of the course
14 Very interesting to listen to. Histarcial, gets people attention.
15 fun, energetic, engaging
16 Without a doubt, the thing about this course I liked the most was its teacher. Mr. Allen made the subject of Linux (a daunting one to those previously uninitiated, even at the best of times[ I myself had problems in my first, self-led foray into Linux]) into an easily accessible, and even fun subject. His joyful enthusiasm in the topic is infectious, and personally, I wouldnt have it any other way. Ive learned quite a bit with his help, and plan to learn much more; heres to seeing him in lecture halls for many more years to come.
17 He made the course more fun
18 He's zany.
19 Very enthusiastic and very knowledgeable.

Forces the students to think about what they need to do and leads them to the answer rather then just giving it to them

20 Ian has great positive energy. He is very enthusiastic to see progress in his students and truly appears to enjoy teaching his students.
21 He was an amazing teacher and encourages you to learn.
22 He's very enthusiastic when teaching.
23 very enthusiastic, approachable, friendly
24 outgoing

knew the material

there if help was needed

ask if we had any questions

25 Ian was a great professor. He was really engaged in the students learning process and worked very hard to prepare us for exams, assignments and tests.
26 The way the teacher helps when you have questions.
27 he is very kind and helpfull
28 he was really fnny and he teaches well
29 Ian's a hoot. He makes learning the mateial a lot of fun, because he is so passionate about what he does and about making sure people understand it.
30 Made the material interesting
31 He made the lectures interesting. Always ecstatic about everything"

Question: What, if anything, could the professor do differently to be of benefit to future students?
Response Rate: 100.00%   (31 of 31)
1 Ease up on the test complexity.
2 If anything the only thing i can thing of would be for more interesting command line work, even though i enjoyed the command line work we did.
3 nothing, he is a great teacher
4 Be a little more open to helping the students outside of the labs.
5 Keep doing what he's doing.

Keep students abreast of the changes in the state-of-the-art, and the trailing edge of technology.

6 Nothing comes to mind.
7 Nothing
8 No comment.
9 I'd change nothing. His method of teaching is enjoyable, fun and easy to follow
10 He needs to stay the same. That is all.
11 I don't believe the professor needs to change anything about his teaching style.
12 Do more examples.
13 there is nothing to change about the professor
14 Nothing.
15 *
16 Perhaps he could be slightly more lenient of those who don't "read all the words. There are often times in which the life of the college student requires more time than there actually is in a day, and the time to stop, read, and understand every single word simply is not available. This should probably be taken into account. Otherwise, this Professor is without a doubt, my best.
17 He was good.
18 N/A
19 Prof Allen is one of the best instructors I've had. Keep doing what you are doing
20 I would like to provide feed back here but do not quite know what to say. Ian has provided both information to suceed in his course but also to succeed in the working world.
21 Nothing.
22 He should explain new Linux contexts a little more and not just assume that we know about them. He only explains the general new contexts but not the one's that aren't obvious.

The labs should be more focused on what could be on the tests and exams. If you have been doing the labs and getting 100 in them, it still won't help you in the tests and exams. Worksheets should be more integrated with labs so you get marks for what you've learned.

23 none that i can think of
24 nothing
25 No suggestions.
26 More time spent explaining what is happening when he does commands in lectures. Some people are able to answer the question but I think others are a bit lost at some points.
27 nothng yet
28 give more assignments about grub
29 More varried lab assignments, maybe add in some groupwork, and less focus on strictly the syntax and the command line interface aspects of Linux.
30 Spend more time on a few subjects
31 Very little to improve

Question: What did you like most about this course?
Response Rate: 100.00%   (45 of 45)
1 The course was engaging, interesting, and provided an excellent overview of Linux. assignments were very timely, hands-on, and helped to solidify learned concepts.
2 All of it
3 The course was well structured. If you missed something in class, it was available on-line. The assignments are difficult but fair. The teacher presents the course content in a clear manner and he is highly motivated and motivating
4 There were many worksheets made to practice using linux, I found them extremely helpful. New assignments every week to make sure that we kept using the operating system.
5 Really gave me a love for linux
6 learning something new
7 The content is new and intresting and it keeps you on your feet
8 The course was great! Linux is new to me and learning a whole new way of thinking was both challenging and satisfying.
9 I want to learn Linux in detail so i am really looking forward to this course/
10 I like the the course material, course Linux server and Assignments.
11 Read ALL the words! Everything about this course was above any standard I've seen in a class.
12 The labs
13 Everything. Definitely the best course besides Fundamentals. Awesome professor, interesting class.
14 The teacher! the worksheets he puts forth are interesting and challenging. The manner in which he puts the material to the student. He makes the subject matter come alive!
15 Ian and subject
16 Everything.
17 The enthusiasm of the prof
18 the whole course.

22 The enthusiasm of the Ian and how he was always energetic and helpful even when we didn't read all the words.
23 The course was interesting, Fedora 12 and Putty were cool to use.
24 Linux in general, I liked learning about a new and unique operating system.
25 nothing really
26 -The teacher
27 The fact that it is on par with Networking Fundamentals (Keith Poore) in it's quality of material, knowledge possessed by the teacher (Ian Allen), structure/layout of the course. This course is fantastically setup, the amount of work Ian puts into his course is phenomenal and unmatched, the course Linux server, his external website, the details, quality of labs, the fact hat he practices what he preaches.

Ian is enthusiastic and passionate about his material.

I believe that we as students are the most detrimental aspect of his course.

28 The teacher was well organized and kept the students up to date. He communicated frequently via email. His course material was easily available on his web site.
29 don't know
30 It was very interesting.
31 The course content, and of course, the teacher's style of teaching.

32 The way this course is taught makes is sooooo interesting and fascinating and makes you want to learn more and more about linux. The material is difficult but the teaching makes ALL the difference.
33 went at a good pace
34 The Labs and the Prof are the best things about this class.
35 It is a good, thorough introduction to Linux, if the professor is good. The lectures all tied into our lab work and tests.
36 The linux class server
37 learn the basics Linux skill
38 The teacher! Linux itself is a complicated subject but our teacher has what it takes to make the course very interesting.
39 How thorough it is
40 It was more exciting to learn linux and to use the terminal
41 The way the teacher presented the content.

1 Unsure.
2 N/A
3 The course is already at peek efficiency. The assignments are fair. In class, the professor is clear and highly motivated and motivating.
4 Even more worksheets to do, maybe just optional and not for marks. I found them very interesting and helpful for learning.
5 Course is excellent"
6 slower pace
7 the material could be taught a little slower with somethings as its sometimes hard to follow.
8 Everything was pretty good. Can't think of anything to make it better.
9 There are already enough benefits for students in this course, so i think they would be concentrating on them!
10 The course needs no improvements.
11 I can't see any improvements. Amazing course.
12 I don't know
13 It feels like as the course went on it got out of sync. The lectures weren't keeping up with all of the new commands we learned and I had to look up a lot of commands from external sources. This is not the fault of the teacher; there is a LOT to teach and not enough time.
14 you would need some serious attention to detail to find anything wrong with this course.
15 It can't be the course is so great in everyway if you changed anything it would be worse. Actually, now that I am done with Level one it would be better if Ian taught level 2.
16 It is good enough.
17 Nothing
18 very good. nothing need to be improved.
19 its perfect
20 None.
21 n/a
22 It's great already why change it
23 Make the course less difficult.
24 Recorded lectures possibly?
25 Change the new ones to the old ones
26 N/A
27 Honestly?

He needs to be given whatever sum of money is required to get him over his desire to not teach higher level Linux courses and be forced to fail students who aren't upto par with what they need to know Linux-wise.

Let me rephrase the question to something more meaningful

"How could the course be used to improve and benefit future students? "

His course style, setup, quality of material/labs should be emulated and replicated. Other teachers should be mandated to sit in on his classes so they can learn how a great teacher teaches. How a great teacher organizes his materials, labs, site layout etc.

28 The second class of the week should be two hours instead of one.
29 don't know
30 n/a
31 In my opinion, it is good how it is, so, no comments.
32 The worksheets really helped to understand and practice commands. Maybe there could be more for ealier assignments in future.
33 there needs to be more tutors for the subject. Couldn't find one.
34 I think the improvements made this year over last were awesome. Let the profs teach there courses how they want to!
35 I took a similar course last year under a different professor and found it incredibly confusing. The quality of the professor matters a lot when covering fundamentals like this.
36 .
37 Give students a different opportunity to show they good skill .

38 I like the this course the way it was.
39 Focus on what we're doing in the labs, in class aswell. Too many things are left up to the student to find. Also the course page should be internal through blackboard. The external site only causes problems for students.
40 need more hands on experience. More in class activity and may be more marks for labs.
41 Not sure.
42 Everything was splendid. No need to fix what isn't broken.
43 not applicable
44 Make labs a little easier to follow

Question: What did you like most about the course professor?
Response Rate: 100.00%   (45 of 45)
1 Ian was extremely competent and enthusiastic about the subject matter. He brought interest and humour to the lectures in a way that facilitated acquisition and understanding of the course material. Ian was also very approachable, and always willing to answer questions or provide help. Ian is strict, but has a genuine desire to help students be the best they can be. His lectures were always enjoyable and often inspiring.
2 Fantastic teacher, the best I've had.
3 I like the professors attitude and tone. He put flair in the way he presents course content. For instance, he sang a rap song in class to interest students. He did that only once of course but this explains the entire approach he takes to teaching: FUN. The teacher is very helpful in labs but doesn't shy away from telling students that they should do it themselves if he feels the students wants him to do his (the student's) job in his place. Mock-exams are presented in class ahead of time which really gives you a feel for the real exam. Also, more mock-exams are available on-line with answers which is truly excellent study material
4 Exceptional. He made learning linux entertaining. I really enjoyed his style of teaching in the lectures, very animated.
5 The professor has a great passion for teaching and linux
6 interesting
7 He is verry knowlageable and helpfull he is a really great teacher.
8 AMAZING!!! One of the best professors I've ever had. He teaches well and his teaching style is very enthusiastic and makes the learning material interesting. He grabs your attention and it is very easy to listen to him speak.
9 He is just An Awesome Teacher!!
10 The professor is very helpful and his way of teaching is very interesting.
11 An amazing teacher. It was very easy to get motivated to learn linux when he has this much enthusiasm for it. His labs are structured perfectly for the course and makes it much easier to remember everything that is needed. He set up practice tests to help study for both midterms and there are already practice questions for the exam which is a month away,
12 He obviously loves the subject, and he passes that enthusiasm on to his students.
13 Funny guy, very knowledgeable. Approachable, and does everything he can to make you pass. Answers even the most stupid of questions and spends time on anything anyone has trouble with.
14 Everything. I love this man, as a human being, not romantically. He's jovial and invested. He's caring but firm. He's understanding and truly zany! He's calculated and prepared. Undeniably one of the greats.
15 Amazing in every possible way
16 Passion, knowledge, professionalism.
17 Really felt like he wants everyone to succeed
18 He is the best professor I have ever studied with.
19 his attitude and response to students
20 Cool.

22 Ian did a lot for us to help us pass. He gave us bonus assignments and lots of practice questions to prepare us for the midterms and exam.
23 I like when he asks us all the time if we have any questions, and if you have a question he will be happy to explain it to you and show you how to do it. He is a great teacher and loves his work.
24 His enthusiasm
25 he was funny
26 -All teachers should follow this man's teaching style!

27 The fact that he really loves the topic that he is teaching. It emanates from him and you get the impression that he'd be doing this even if he wasn't being paid. See above for more details.
28 Very likable and knew his subject. He knows how to teach and not just read from a book
29 Good all round
30 He is very enthusiastic.
31 His effort and interest for teaching us, I never got bored during his lectures and labs, and I learned a lot from him.
32 He is so enthusiastic about the material that it rubs off on you. He is a real inspiration and I wish more teachers were this passionate about the course material. He is reeeeaalllly helpful and makes sure you understand the material. He also keeps tabs on concepts that people have difficulty with and goes over them before the tests to make sure we understand it.
33 he was always in a good mood.
34 Hes awesomely helpfull, and challeneges people to find there own answers without just handing them out. This proffessor always inspires me to learn and go above and beyond.
35 He is friendly and energetic, and clearly passionate about the course and teaching. He uses a lot of online components (course linux server, automated marking scripts) to make things very fast and convenient for the students.
36 He was funny
37 This is a very interesting course but sometimes that could be challenging.
38 The guy is fantastic. I liked the way he talks and how he explains things.
39 very knowledgeable.
40 His style of teaching
41 His attitude in class.
42 Ian was the best! He knows the subject well, is enthusiastic about it, helps without giving the answer away, and is an extremely awesome person! He was easily my favorite professor.
43 not applicable
44 His personality
45 It's very rare that somebody as knowledgeable as he is is able to explain things at a very basic level, and do so very effectively. Ok, his enthusiasm was also infectious, he was able to take very dry topics and make them enjoyable (even entertaining), and he obviously put in a great deal of effort into the course. I should stop there - his penguin's head might explode .... :)

Question: What, if anything, could the professor do differently to be of benefit to future students?
Response Rate: 100.00%   (45 of 45)
1 Nothing to note.
2 N/A
3 Nothing really. His course is so well structured, he is so fair, he is so motivated and motivating and he is so knowledgeable that he should just continue just what his is doing the way he is doing it. One of the best teachers I have ever had. He should be given an award for teacher of the year.

The class average is often low and the failure rate appears high. The college may interpret this as a failing on the professor's part: nothing could be further from the truth. It is simply that technology is a field which is often hard to grasp and the teacher should not be blamed for this.

4 Just as I said earlier, I loved the worksheet, give me more worksheets! I find without having a purpose it's hard for me to just practice using linux, those worksheets give me that purpose.

8 He is quite a strict marker but that's kind of a good thing. However a little bit of leniency wouldn't hurt.
9 Continue being funny and Awesome!
10 The professor can add some more assignments and labs in order to make this course more advance.
11 More rapping....definitely more rapping.
12 I don't know
13 Teach Linux for every year so I could keep having him.
14 Nothing. Absolutely nothing. At first, I thought it wrong that he was a person who is set in his ways, but now I understand that it isn't that he's set in his ways but that he's found THE best way to do most everything and sticks to it. He's also willing to change or entertain ideas of change but he knows what he knows and won't apologize for his wisdom.

I cannot say enough about this regal gentleman.

15 Teach me next semester in level 2

16 Everything is good enough.

18 Teach more courses, teach more students.
19 he is good
20 Nothing much might not be able to change for this. Mostly is for the student to speak up. Even though reading all the words is important. Some people with dyslexia have trouble with reading structure or the language base and mix things up or missread things easily. I feel dumb when asking a lot asking for help each time and I feel the other might think I'm just asking to get the homework done quicker. I'll keep working hard.

22 He provided us with check files in our last 3 assignments I thought that they would have helped us in some of the earlier assignments as well.

31 In my opinion, what the teacher is doing is best. His style of teaching is the best.
32 Please please reconsider teaching the higher level linux courses. I know you are a hard marker and yes it does affect my grades, but the most important thing in school is that when you finish a course you should have actually understood what was taught. It is hard to find teachers who design and teach courses like that, where you realise that you actually understand everything.
33 had an extra class for tutoring. be more approcable. more examples on how commands should be used
34 nothing comes to mind
35 Not much; he already puts in an incredible amount of effort.

37 How will you benefit from further study or training implement the strategies.
38 Please, do not change anything.
39 less silly nonsense and trying to win over the student with laughs.
40 Need more time during midterm. Ex: If there are 45 questions in the test then you should get 55-60 mins to complete the test.
41 Not sure.
42 Nothing. He did an excellent job.
