========================== Notes for Windows 98 Users ========================== -IAN! idallen@ncf.ca The textbook for DAT2333 Fall 2000 is "Advanced Windows 95". Those of you using Windows 98 will not be able to do some of the tutorial steps exactly as written in the book. Here is a partial set of notes for Windows 98 users: Tutorial 5 ---------- Viewing the Files on a Startup Disk p.193 Your start-up disk won't look at all like what you see in the text. Look at this web page: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/Win98/Reskit/Part7/wrkappb.asp At the bottom of the page is a heading "The Windows 98 Startup Disk" that explains the contents of your startup disk and how it differs from the Win95 startup disk. Testing a Startup Disk p.196 Since Win98 uses a RAMdisk for startup, you will see a menu of startup choices before you get to the usual DOS prompt. Using the Print Troubleshooter p.202-210 The help files changed under Win98. The figures in this section of the text don't match. You can print a test page by going to Start | Settings | Printers and right-clicking on the name of a printer and choosing Properties. A button in the General tab will let you print a test page. LPT1 p.218 You may not see a "Device usage" section under Win98. p.219 You need to click on "Driver File Details" to see the list of drivers for the hardware. Tutorial 6 ---------- p.229 The Find dialog box is slightly different. Tutorial 7 ---------- The order of dialog boxes has changed under Windows 98. Review the changes here as you work through the tutorial. Starting Microsoft Backup p.273-274 p.273 You may be asked if you have any backup devices attached. You should click on "NO". p.273-74 The dialog boxes are different. When the Backup Wizard dialog box open ("Welcome to Microsoft Backup"), select "Back up selected files..." and then "Next". You will see a dialog box similar to Figure 7-9. Follow the directions under "Selecting the Files to Back Up". Specifying the Destination Drive p.277-278 p.277 When you select the "Next" button in Step 1, you will have a choice. Select "All selected files". p.278 In the dialog box that begins with "Where to back up", select the folder icon to the right of the *.qic file name to generate a dialog box similar to Figure 7-13. Use the drop-down menu list to select the A: drive and change the *.qic name according to the directions for your assignment. When the name is correct, close the dialog box. The "Where to back up" file name should now read something like "A:\MyBackup.qic". (The exact name depends on what you set it to be.) Select "Next". You will be presented with some options in a dialog box that begins "How to back up". Select both options (Compare and Compress). Select "Next". Saving a Backup Selection in a File Set p.278-279 There is no "File" menu. The Wizard will present you with some options in a dialog box that begins "Name the backup job". Follow the naming convention given on p.279. Specifying Backup Options p.279-281 You already did this in the "How to back up" dialog box. You can change the options by using the menu item Job | Options. Click "Start" to begin the backup. Here are the differences in how things are named again: Win98: Where to back up Win95: Backup Set Label (p.280) - this names the backup output file - file name extension will be .qic Win98: Name the backup job Win95: Saving a Backup Selection (p.278) - this names the rules and options used to make the above file, so you can use the same rules again without retyping them - file name extension will be .set ...to be continued...
