Ian!s Computer Science Rap Videos

1 Computer Science Rap #1 - “Why are you in Computer Science?” Index up to index

In January 2011, I improvised a rap for my second-term CST8281 computer class:

“Only do, what only you can do.” - E.W.Dijkstra

With this quote firmly in mind, I solicited five words about “why are you in Computer Science?” from my classroom, wrote them on the board (“job, knowledge, money, interesting, fun”), played a CCC beat track from NineInchNails, put on a red hoodie, and performed a freestyle, completely improvised rap including all of the words they gave me. This might be a first for Computer Studies. It’s certainly a first for me.

The music was fetched January 2011 via Creative Commons

The rap was completely improvised; there was no script or pre-planning other than finding the background music. The text below is transcribed (roughly) from the video. The five words the students gave me before the rap were job, knowledge, money, interesting, and fun and these five words are highlighted in ALL-CAPITALS below:

okay, you said:
you want your JOB to be INTERESTING
you want to be, like, impressed
with your boss
your employer
your destroyer
destroyer of your free time
you want KNOWLEDGE
you want in your brain
you want FUN
you want to disdain
the same kind of stuff
as what you read online everyday
I tell you
it's not about the JOB
it's not about the knob
on your head
it's about what you want to learn
what you want to achieve
what you want your life to be
it's not just INTERESTING
it's not about the MONEY
the MONEY is, like, funny
MONEY is funny
it doesn't make you happy
I want to say
you want to have FUN
you wish you had gone
it's with painting the sun
that's what it is
for you.

2 Computer Science Rap #2 - “Course Summary Before The Exam” Index up to index

To close the course on April 19, I did another improvised rap. I again solicited some words for the Rap Subject. The students chose: ASCII, EBCDIC, UNICODE, form vs. content, and LipDub.

I used the same CCC beat track from NineInchNails, but I had to use my red windbreaker instead of an official red hoodie. Sorry.
